Capt John ran his first overnight drum trip of the season last night with the Pete Cheng Charter from West Chester, PA . He just called when he returned to the dock with his fish report and THEY SLAMMED ‘EM!!!!!! Capt. John doesn’t post numbers but they had a great trip. The bite really turned in the middle of the night. At times they had 2 and 3 fish on at a time. Some of the drum weighed in over 60 pounds and the charter released some of their catch. Early in the trip they caught their share of sharks and skates before the drum started biting but the sharks and skates also were around most of the night. Capt. John was also delighted to report that there was only one boat in sight about a quarter of a mile away from where he fished. We have one open spot available on the overnight drum trip we are running on Saturday night. If you are interested, please email or call Capt. John at 609 425-1970.
Updated Friday afternoon report which was not nearly as good as Thur night trip
You know the story about yesterday's hero and today goat. Well maybe not that bad but we did not even come close yesterday afternoon catching those ugly prehistoric hard pulling fish. Others flat out slammed them and many other just had a few but overall drum fishing is pretty good for most. It almost seems if you are not on the right location it is skate city and with just a few drum bites but those on the right on the numbers hit the mother lode. I have watched a few boats slam them while other a 100 yards away struggle. Location is really a big deal this spring and it seems more so than in past years at least to me. Fresh clams and the skills of the anglers detecting those faint drum bites really do make a difference. Most beginners come back with a lot of empty hooks but that is drum fishing and within a short period of time most learn how to hook these fish. Possibly a little too much to drink might also hinder that ever so slight feeling of tap-tap when drum bight but others would argue a good buzz makes them a better fisherman. Overall many had really good trip yesterday and now there is a bite on both tides and we will be back out fishing the late outgoing tonight, Sat, Sun and Monday back doing a traditional late afternoon trip on Tuesday. We will be are have open dates on May 27, 28, 29 and will probably run a least a couple of make-up trips and we are available for regular 6 person charters.
PS: My friend caught a 44 inch striper late yesterday afternoon fishing right next to us on the drum grounds right inside the inbound traffic lane between Brandywine and 14. Another friend called me and got 40 nice stripers around the up by Palmyra, NJ so there seems to be still striper up in the river waiting to come down our way.
