“Here, striper”-Fishing report-09-28-10-By Bob Misak
So the past weeks weather gave us literally nothing much to talk about as guys had trouble getting outside for most of the week, and then came the much needed rain. The head boats are on the bluefish and the day guys are on the wrecks catching sea bass and other good eating deep water stuff, like a tog for most customers on the boats. The blue fishing is great with 10 to 15 lb. gators in the ocean and even in and out of the surf from time to time. Basil is getting fresh bunker and is always loaded down with clams and green crabs. October is almost here! I got a feeling the bass will move in rather quickly, and an early run of big fish usually goes off about the 1st or 2nd week of October. There has been a few bass caught by the guys fishing in the inlet, and with more participation will come more stripers. The kingfish are still in the surf along the finger jetties and some dudes are braving the 8 ft. waves to grab enough to toss in the pan. Sand worms or fresh clams are the ticket, and the surf and the ocean should be calming down as we speak. This weekend should prove fruitful for those who venture out, and I’ve got a ton of reports from guys who are releasing some pretty darn big flatties out there. Don’t listen to the “shoulder devil” and toss them puppies back. It just isn’t worth the headache or the monetary loss. The L.B.I. surf classic begins in a couple weeks and that is one great tournament for the fishermen who fish the island. The daily prizes and weekly prizes and bi-weekly prizes are enough to make you want to quit your job and sit on the beach for 8 weeks. The shop is getting into bass mode along with the rest of the shops on the blvd, and a little pre-fishing to sharpen your casting skills and stake claim to your rips and holes isn’t a bad idea. I heard a rumor that Basil is “thinking about” fishing this year. Huh. Anyway, the blowfish are still hanging around in the bay, and as soon as it clears up that will be a great option as the big kingfish and other good stuff are starting to fill the bay. The little sea bass are a bit of a pain but great fun for the kiddies on the boat. Heavy chum is, of course a must and a good running tide, in or out, helps a lot as well. We actually caught some really nice crabs while we were blowfishing, so until the next shed comes at full moon in October you still have a little time for some hand-lining. The jetty is rich with cocktail blues, and on occasion some big boys come in and out and guys are there with metal to capitalize. The togs are always out there for the taking, and nice ones too. See basil and he’ll hand pick some green crabs for your entertainment. He screams sort of like my grandma when she sees a mouse, it’s pretty cool. So stop on down to Barnegat Light bait and tackle for some supplies, and feel free to sit on the chairs and bother Basil while you wait for the perfect tide. Good luck and great fishing to everyone, and don’t forget those jetty cleats! Be safe.
