“The going’s on”-Fishing report-06-25-10-By Bob Misak
This week was a sort of o.k. week with some more keeper fluke coming in but yet a very high ratio with a ton of throwbacks. I fished the pocket from 8th st. up to 14th in Barnegat Light on Friday and the bottom was just crazy with fluke. There was a lot of participation as well with one dude pulling in about a 5 lb. fish, and another with a stringer of three keeps. Guys were seemingly catching fish on just about every cast, with some using Gulp baits, some using killies and some just buck tailing with a curly tail on. So if you’re looking for a keeper or two the surf is a good way to save on boat gas and get some exercise. The surf is still giving up some bass during the night hours when everything calms down, and fresh bunker or clam globs will do it for you, but there is a lot of bait thieving fish out there, so load up. I did hook into a pretty huge cow-nose ray, so it’s a sign that the water temps are on the rise for the summer, and right now they’re in the mid-sixties, subject to change at a moment’s notice as the wind flips around. The small pods of bunker were all over up in Barnegat Light on Friday, but there are some big nets set out off of 18th st., so the schools are kind of broken up.
Outside the guys that are drifting for bass are still catching fish, and I talked to a guy who was still catching bass in Raritan Bay, so I think we have plenty of time to score on stripers before they move off. The fluking is picking up out in the ocean, and just in time for the fluke tourneys to get under way. Fish are being caught in 65 to 70 ft. of water, and there are more keeper fluke coming in than say, last week. With the tog season getting under way on Thursday, the head boats will start doing some wreck fishing, and there are some sea bass to catch as well, so if you want to take a ride out on the big boats, you won’t be disappointed. Especially when the blues are in full force and they are averaging 10 to 12 lbs. with some 15’s coming over the side. Those half day bluefish trips are awesome to go on right now, and if you like blue fishing now is the time. You’ll come home with tired arms, that’s for sure.
On the jetty things are always great; there are guys going nuts tossing metals and loading up on the cocktail blues, which are running in and out all the way up to the hand rail. The togs are thick and big on the jetty right now, and opening day on July 16 will be a good one. Of course you are only allowed one tog per man at 14 inches, but who cares? Those togs are some really great eating and you have a shot at catching a 10 lb. fish or bigger right now, provided you have the right equipment. Strong line, a stout rod, and a bucket of green crabs will do it. So head on down to Barnegat Light bait and tackle, and they’ll hook you up with all your baits and such, including those deadly spots. Good luck and great fishing to everyone.
