Flounder Bowl
2011 Flounder Bowl
The “Flounder Bowl” is back. This year's tournament is scheduled for June 25 with a captains meeting June 24.
This event is a two-day party with a fishing tournament on the side. The Flounder Bowl is hosted by the Peninsula Salt Water Sport Fisherman's Association but it is the many businesses who sponsor this event which make it such a great time. These businesses are providing a guaranteed First Place award of $5,000. They also make it possible to provide free food, drink and music for participants at both the captains meeting and at the weigh-in. The sponsors provide for team buckets given out at the captains meeting and they are also providing various prizes that will be given away at the weigh-in. Each team will find door-prize tickets in their team buckets that will give them chances to win these prizes.
The Flounder Bowl will be held out of Dare Marina and Yacht Sales (www.daremarina.com). Boats will be allowed to fish from any port but the fish must be brought to Dare Marina for weigh-in.
This is a team tournament with an entry fee of $100 per boat with up to 4 anglers. Additional anglers will cost $25 each. Winners will be determined by the combined weight of the team's top three fish. Cash prizes will be paid through six places.
To give everyone a chance to win, teams not placing in the top six will be entered into a “Lucky Dog” drawing. The team drawn will win an additional cash prize.
There will be a prize for the heaviest flounder caught by a child and a prize for the heaviest flounder caught by a woman in the tournament.
Teams will be given the option of entering a “Big Fish Calcutta” for an additional $100 entry fee. This is a 100% payout to the team that has entered the Calcutta, which weighs in the single heaviest fish.
There is a special Sponsors' Challenge Division where teams entered by the tournament sponsors will compete with each other for the special Sponsors' Trophy. The winning sponsor will get to keep this trophy until next year's tournament. Currently, the Sponsors' Trophy is in the possession of Grafton Fishing Supply.
The 2009 Flounder Bowl had a total cash payout of $10,900 plus donated merchandise prizes. The 2010 Flounder Bowl had a total cash payout of $14,700 plus merchandise donated by the sponsors. The winnings are expected to grow again this year. A total of 97 teams competed in the 2010 event. The defending champion is Brian Hogge and his team “Hogchoker”. This is your chance to fish with and against some of the best flounder anglers in the state. There will be food, drink, music, and multiple chances to win. Come on out and join the fun!

Due to this tremendous sponsor support, some of the proceeds from last year's event were used to make contributions to various fishery organizations. $1,000 from the tournament was given to the medical fund for a young lady who required multi-organ transplants (the procedure went well).

The Flounder Bowl is almost here. The captains meeting is on June 24 with June 25 the fishing day. This event is made possible by the support of our wonderful sponsors. These businesses are going out of their way to make sure that the angling community has a fun-filled event.
Mostly, the tournament will be the same as last year. 1st place is still a guaranteed $5,000. The entry fee is still only $100 per team with up to 4 anglers. If you just enter the tournament, skip the fishing, and show up to eat and drink, both at the captains meeting and at the weigh-in, you will come out ahead. There is an optional, Big Fish Calcutta, with an entry fee of $100. The single heaviest fish takes 100% of the pot.
We have been able to make some changes for this year, again, due to the tremendous support of the sponsors.
The payouts for 2nd through 5th places have been increased.
A new prize is being added this year. There will be a $500 award for the single heaviest flounder caught by a member of the Peninsula Salt Water Sport Fisherman’s Association fishing the tournament. There is no additional entry fee for this award. You just have to be a current member of the PSWSFA. There will be a booth set up at the captains meeting where members can check in and make sure that their dues are up to date. You will also be able to join the PSWSFA at the captains meeting and be immediately eligible for this new prize.
There will be more food and drink this year. At last year’s captains meeting, we wiped out the poor sub shop providing the food. They had to deliver food three times and we totally cleaned out the restaurant. This year’s captains meeting will be a barbeque prepared by Dickey Hill of “Pig Out Barbeque”. The big smoker grill and all of that stuff will be there.
The weigh-in will still be a seafood fest. There will be scallops from the Seaford Scallop Company, fish from the Wanchese Fish Company, hush puppies from Bill’s Seafood Restaurant and a bunch of other stuff. Steamed crabs will be added this year. There will be a crab picking area set up. Basically, a whole lot of good food and drink with some flounder fishing thrown in.
The York County Sheriff’s Dept. will have a presence at the tournament and the Virginia Marine Resource Commission will be at the weigh-in this year. We want everyone to have a safe and legal great time!

There will be a lot of people going through registration.
The actual captains meeting, when we go over the rules, is at 7 PM Friday. Registration (and food and drink) begins at 6 PM.

Dare Marina is offering free boat mooring both Friday and Saturday night for Flounder Bowl participants, based on available space. Also, if you need a hotel room, they have set up a discount rate with one of the local hotels. Contact Mike Hanna at (757) 898-3000 if you need help with either of these.
There will be more parking for both cars and boat trailers than last year. Again, if you have any questions about trailering your boat to the marina, contact Mike Hanna.

PSWSFA Members:
There has been a new award added this year. There will be a $500 prize to the member that catches the heaviest flounder while fishing the tournament. You will need to have your club dues up to date, prior to fishing, to be eligible for this award. There will be a membership table set up at the captains meeting. We can always use more club members to help with this event. You can still fish the tournament. All of the positions that have to stay on shore have been filled. Simple things, like helping to direct parking, selling t-shirts and so on. Frank Kearney has a list of all of the things that we need members to help with. (We already have enough volunteers to help the beer girls).
