Yesterday's New from the NJ DEP - The majority of the state's shellfish beds have been reopened! The NJ Department of Environmental Protection has reopened the vast majority of shellfish beds in the state after tissue samples collected over the weekend met federal health standards. The beds were closed Aug. 27 as Hurricane Irene approached New Jersey. Commissioner Bob Martin signed an order reopening shellfish beds in the ocean from Sandy Hook to Cape May Point and reopening estuarine shellfish beds from the Metedeconk River to Cape May Point. The order returns the beds to the harvest classification status that was in effect prior to passage of Hurricane Irene. For more information on the reopening visit http://www.state.nj.us/dep/newsrel/2011/11_0109.htm on the DEP website.

The 7th Annual Hooked On Fishing, Not On Drugs Kids Surf Fishing Tournament (H.O.F.N.O.D) was held on Saturday, August 13th. A HUGE thank you to all the members, including their wives, children and friends, who helped make this event another success. Once again we received numerous compliments from many sources on how well the tournament was run. You should all be extremely proud. We would also like to thank the A.S.A.C. organization for their outstanding support and assistance again this year. There were 190 children register and they caught a total of 48 fish – Not too shabby. We didn’t top last year’s total of 177 fish, but a good time was had by all. Mostly kingfish, flounder and small bluefish were caught. The Cummings brothers (who were tied with the most points) landed some nice kingfish. A point was based on the length of the fish. All fish counted. This year’s winners were:
8 & Under Age Group
1st – Matt Cummings (33.50 Pts)
1st – Kevin Cummings (33.50 Pts)
2nd – Dylan O’Connell (25.75 Pts)
3rd – Daniel O’Toole (20.50 Pts)
9-12 Age Group
