We are running an open boat back bay trip this Wednesday, August 31 from Noon to 5 PM. We have been doing very well with shedder crab and live grass shrimp from the BI Buoy to the 42 Buoy, anchoring in 7 to 9 feet of water. We are using the ultra lite six pound spinning outfits armed with 1/8 ounce pink or chartruese jigheads tipped with shedder crab. The weakies are in and right up until Irene we were catching 12 to 20 inch fish. The goal is to see how many different species we can catch on any given trip, sometimes it goes into double digits. In the mix have been weakfish, snapper blues, fluke, blowfish, burrfish (porcupine puffer), sand shark, kingfish, sea robin, sea bass, lizardfish, croaker. Everything in the bay eats this gourmet bait. The ultra lite tackle keeps it fun and the bigger weakies really test that tackle.

The cost is $130 per person. One guy is signed up already, there is room for two more. I have a charter that same morning from 6 AM to 11 AM for the same type of fishing, so I should be well dialed in to what is going on. Call to reserve or get more info.

That was quite a week. Between the earthquake, a massive hurricane coming ashore just down the road, and going through a mandatory evacuation it seemed like there was always something to worry about. But it's over, we're back home, and we should have the boat back at the dock sometime later today. Time to get back to fishing again.

Not a lot to report on from last week. All of our late week trips were canceled due to the impending storm and our Wednesday trip was cut short by a minor medical emergency that required attention. But while we only fished for 40 minutes on Wednesday, it sure appeared that the back bay fluke bite was continuing to be on fire with 10 or 11 fish coming over the side before we had to head back in. Hard to believe that catching a fluke every three or four minutes would become the norm, but that's what we've been experiencing on our charters for the past three or four weeks. If only that could continue.

It's always difficult to tell what a late summer storm like this will do to our fluke fishery. It will certainly take a day or two for the effects of the run-off from all the rain to clear. The big question is whether the storm pushed the fish out of the bay and if so, how far offshore have they moved. It would be a shame to see the storm put an end to the fluke fishing when the feds have finally given us the okay to fish for them through September. We'll be resuming our charter schedule on Wednesday, so we should have a better idea of what's going on by our next report.

"We survived Irene" and will be open again starting tomorrow morning at 5 AM. We hope all also went well for all our fellow anglers.

What a wild and woolly week to live on the East coast. If earthquakes and hurricanes are your thing, this was the place to be! I hope everyone has made it through all the events this week with minimal ill effects. I just completed a quick assessment of Family, friends and property and thankfully everyone and everything is intact and we will be back up and running in a couple of days.

Although the mandatory state wide coastal evacuation lead to most of the trips being canceled we were able to complete a couple of very successful backbay/inlet trips with fantastic action and variety!

Anglers on board the Reel Fantasea enjoyed light tackle action with stripers [keeper to 29"] weakfish, bluefish, fluke, blowfish, kingfish, burrfish, small seabass, porgies, small sharks, sea robins and ravens, rays, skates... along with a few other species.

The trip of the week was the Jay Simmons party who scored 3 Barnegat Bay Grand Slams [striper, bluefsih, fluke, weakfish] on 1 trip!

Skillful "Reel Fantasea" Angler of the week goes to fishermen extraordinaire Jay Simmons who single handily scored 2 slams!

I'm looking forward to getting back to fishing this week and see "what the storm dragged in", as there is usually some southern speedsters [pelagics] that will show up closer inshore and could stay for sometime afterwards, if bait, water temp and water quality come together.
