What a summer it has been. I have not made as many updates here as I would have liked, primarily because I was busy fishing. Weather was super fantastic here in the Northeast, without nary a weather cancelation from the 2nd week of June through the last week of September. Unfortunately, fall is not shaping up to be as friendly, as nearly the entire east coast fishing fleet will be sitting at the dock this weekend.
We saw good fishing throughout the summer on the school bluefin until the water warmed too much inshore, which brought in a whole host of "offshore" species to our inshore waters. Wahoo and white marlin were being caught within 20 miles of the beach...not by everyone, but it was not uncommon.
On the bottom fishing scene, it was an excellent summer for flounder fishing, both for numbers of fish and for size. Our biggest of the summer weighed in at well over 8 pounds. Here are some of the Sutphen boys with the big one and some other nice flatties -

By late August, the sea bass had come off the spawn and we were into them pretty good, averaging around 100 keeper fish per day for 6-person parties. Here is Bob from the Sheehan party with one of the many over 2 pounds caught in late August -

The bottom fishing got better as September wore on, and by the end of the month it was pretty much catch all you want fishing for the guys that knew what they were doing. The Lojeski party took home 144 of their legal limit of 150 fish as they were throwing back keepers well before the end of the day. Tom had the biggest that day at around 3 pounds -

Fishing continues to be good in October, but we are now fighting the weather. In addition to the sea bass, croakers and weakfish are inshore (25'-40'+) in good numbers. Perhaps my best trip of the year was this past Saturday when I took my son (1 day before his 2nd birthday) to get in on the weakies and croakers. It was his first ocean trip, and he held up for 3 hours! Here he is with his first keeper weakie -

We should have an excellent fall to which to look forward, with continued good bottom fishing (a few more weeks of sea bass, then the tog), and we will see some big bluefish inshore and the stripers will be right behind them.
