“Dude, lets fish!”-Fishing report-06-23-10-by Bob Misak
This week still held onto some nice reports of bass coming in from both the beach and the boats, and bass season has a little time to go before guys start to pack it in and head for the flukin’ tournaments. Robbie Vallone fished with his dad on Tuesday and they boated some nice bass, the biggest busting thirty lbs. Yes, that’s right; I did say Robbie fished off of a boat! I hope he took his Dramamine. Anyway, the “Simply Bassin” tournament ends on Sunday, and it looks like the three seals, Dante Sorriente, Jason Delpalazzo, and Shawn Taylor, all of whom are household names in the spring bass-a-thon, will round out the top three. I can’t imagine that will change with the bunker thinning out and participation thinning with it. Those guys are all excellent bass fishermen, and their efforts are indeed well deserved. Dante won the Berkeley Striper club’s grip of cash last Sunday, taking both Calcuttas as well as the top prize. Looks like the 49 lb. fish Dante produced is going to take it all, big and small! Congrats go out to Dante on an excellent spring, and you can bet he’ll “smack the beehive” in the fall derby as well. The bluefish are just about everywhere you look, in the bay, on the beach, and outside and they’re busting 10 to 15 lbs, so hold onto those rods!
The fluking ratio is, uh, high. 20 to one, 30 to one, whatever. I know that if you want to take the kids out to have some fun, go fluking! They’re in the suds, the bay, and outside the inlet. If you want big fluke, go over to Barnegat Light bait and tackle and pick up some spots. This will definitely up your game, and those bass will be on them like a cat at a fish fry. Spots are a very versatile bait, and as we all say, just to say it, big bait, big fish! It is a very true statement, no matter how sick you get of hearing it. Basil, Nick, and Josh and Paul also have fresh bunker for those of you trying to give it one last shot on the sands, as well as fresh clams for the triggerfish that are surely on their way inshore. I dropped over to the 6th st. dock on Friday to check it out, and there wasn’t anything to check out! Not one guy was fishing. By July 1st when the blackfish season opens back up, it will be standing room only over there. You have to stand anyway, or you can’t fish over the hand rail. Maybe I’m just really short. No, I’m definitely really short. I’ll stand on a bucket. Oh. Never mind, there are things popping all over, and it will get better as the water temps rise outside. The south winds knocked the water temps back a bit early in the week, but with these steamy days we’re about to get, that will change. I heard a report of some commercial crabbers that have a few blowfish coming up in the traps, and that is music to my ears! I fished for fluke on the jetty last weekend, and saw about 10 or 12 spiny puffers cruising back and forth. No, I didn’t catch a keeper fluke. See ya at the shop, and good luck and great fishing to everyone.
