Those of you who have not had the chance to get in on the great drumming are really missing some excellent fishing. I cancelled a few days due to the windy weather Seems that the downeast hulls can fish in about anything but my anglers were a bit worried about the old mal de mer so, Starting on Tuesday, we went a drummin. Jay Vederman brought his 6 yr old son, his Dad, and his Bro in law Brian and we left at 3:30. We set up around 4:15 and within 1/2 hr. , we had a triple header hooked up. That was truly a circus! The 3 guys had never caught a drum but with a bit of caoching, they each gott their first. all 60# or so. The action slowed a bit and I made a short move, where we caught another. By thenit was 6:30 and the kids had to go to school the next day so, we ran home. believe me, they were a happy crew!
On Wednesday, Chack Many, who you may remember as the fellow who released several 44"+ bass last Fall came aboard. He left the happy confines of 20+ days on strpers in N jersey to try his luck since he had never caught a drum. It did not take too long for his first.
Small, but it was a drum. Of course, we released it . I realise that folks like to eat drum but I personally feel that the length limit should be say 30" since we do kill a load of small fish as can be seen at any cleaning table around the bay. anyway, a few minutes later, he had his second fish.
We caught 7 more in the less than 30 lb. range and released them all. Chuck was having a ball! I said that these were neat fish but i figured that we should look for bigger fish so he would have the REAL experience. So off we went. When I got to ;where the big'uns were, the tide was almost dead and I worried that we had brought the flowers. We moved twice, and finally at just about slack hit the first BOOMER!
After we bled him and kept it overnight he still weighed 78 lbs! Now that's a drum! Since a good friend of mine asked if we could save one, we kept the fish. Not ten minutes later, Chuck was on again.
We got the fish to the boat and he was another beauty. I lip gaffed him and we took some pics.
We then released him to fight again.
I had a great time fishing with Chuck and I really look forward to out next trip. It is great to have a guy on board who loves to fish as much as I do. By the way, I will stay down in Cape May into next week and I do have a couple of days open so, give a call if you'd like to do battle with these nifty, though ugly monsters.
