Not sure if this has ever been covered on SF.com but here is a tip that I did NOT invent but have found to be very useful.
We fish the sod banks of the Nanticoke River, clay island and Bloodsworth Island trolling bucktails and stoms shads. We get as close as we can to the sod bank and troll as slow as we can. We hit bottom often with the boat and the baits. So what we did to help the baits stay suspended but still keep the bait way back behind the boat to elude the engine noise was to place a little 5 inch Squidnation bird (i'm sure you can use and small bird ) about 3 to 4 feet in front of the bait. The bird will keep the bait suspended and keep it from getting hung on the stumps no matter how far back you fish. Works like a charm. Check it out
