“Dog Days”- Fishing report-08-15-10-By Bob Misak
The week went quite well with the inlet holding some decent fluke but the winds went east on Friday and I’ll tell you, it shut the fluking down a bit. The Lacey Elks held their annual fluke tourney on Saturday and the 1000 dollar winner took home the cash on a 3.8 lb. flattie. The weights were down a bit compared to past years, but that made the action an “anybody can win” game. As soon as we get to that shift back to west, or even south, things will get rolling again. Most boats couldn’t get out the inlet on Saturday so the two tournaments that were held were mostly in the inlet, and we couldn’t buy a decent fish. The guys who actually placed in the money ventured out side early, before the weather turned. I do understand that one boat did get on two really nice fish in front of the lighthouse to get in there and grab some digit. On a lighter note I have several reports of blowfish sneaking into the bay, and if you head out chumming on the outgoing you’ll pick up a few, and some dudes are catching bass in the surf and on eels off the jetty at night, average size being 30 to 34 inches. Yep, that’s right, bass! This is truly a blessing since the weakfish took a vacation, and it keeps things rolling along. The kingfish are sneaking in too, so in a week or two the bay should load up with the smaller fish, and they’re some good eats. I warn you though, that the tiny sea bass are in the bay with a vengeance, and they eat your sock if you drop it down there. But sifting through those little pains provides plenty of excitement for the youngsters on the boat. The crabbing remains good but you have drop the egg holding females back. Out on the jetty the tog are still going strong, and some big fish have come off in the last couple weeks, but it’s mostly the sharpies that are heading to the end and putting up with high water and mouthfuls of salt to get to those 6 to 8 lb. beauties. I haven’t seen any triggers in a while and that’s probably due to the fast cooling of the water temps this week, but the wrecks are still going strong with nice catches of sea bass up to four lbs. and some fatty tog mixed in there. Barnegat Light bait & tackle has plenty of green crabs, and Pete Figueroa grabbed some and headed out there on Sunday for a 22 inch fish off the rock pile. I’m not worrying about the fluking going sour just yet, but the season does end in three weeks, so those who want to finish out the season on a high note have that time to do it. All in all the past three weeks of the season was much better than last year, that’s for sure.
As soon as the bigger boats can go out to the canyons we’ll see more of those big eyes and yellow fins coming to the scales as their seasons are far from over as we haven’t even seen that many mahis come in. Even the bluefish have thinned out in the bay as well as outside, but went the winds shift back it’ll be on again, no doubt. So Basil and Nicky are down at the shop with chum, killies green crabs, and those deadly spots for those who are serious about putting up a giant doormat fluke, and they have what you need for your excursion. We’ll see you down there and of course good luck and great fishing to everyone.
