Dante’s leading”-Fishing report-06-15-10-By Bob Misak
The past weekend was pretty decent out there on the sands as guys were still into big bass, and Jason Delpalazzo’s 42 lb. bass leading the “Simply Bassin’ tourney fell by the wayside. Not that second place is a bad thing, but it’s going to be a tough nut to crack with Dante Sorriente bringing in the biggest fish so far, and a bruiser it was at 49 lbs! When Jason busted 42 lbs, I said, “I smell a thousand bucks!” Well, with a 49 lb. fish to beat “I taste victory!” You will need to bust 50 lbs. to win this one, and a few good bass guys are saying that it will come to be, and, it just might in 2010. There are some nice fluke being caught in the suds as well, and fresh spearing on a one or two oz. bucktail is going to do it for you. Don’t forget those trailer hooks, they make a big difference and the shop has them, as well as killies and squid for you old schoolers, and plenty of fresh bunker and clams for bassing. There is still at least a good solid month of cow chasing on the beach, and more big fish will hit the scales as the bigger fish are now chasing those small schools of bunker close to the wash.
Out in the bay guys are catching fluke, but there is a ton of complaining going on about the algae bloom, and the bay is slimed up. But those who are keeping small bucktails off the bottom are getting some nice fluke on the chase, and they’re spitting up tons of shrimp, which is why you should use small stuff, like eighth and quarter oz. bucktails. Spro has some great ones out on the shelves. Of course you might want to cut back to 20 lb. test line, or even smaller, to feel the bite.
The blues are wreaking havoc in the bay and the inlet, and the more they eat, the bigger they are getting and I must tell you they are gorging themselves. The blue claw crabs are a big item in the bay right now, and anglers are loading up. I like to find a nice quiet spot along the edge of a channel, and crab on the drops. This is what I did as a kid when out there with my dad, and I would always load up on crabs near the channel’s edges. Or you could anchor up in Oyster Creek, where there are more crabs than a nursing home.
Outside the head boats are still putting together some awesome catches of sea bass with some ling, and let us not forget the opening of the one tog a day summer season on July 1st. The jetty rocks are packed with big bruiser tog, and this is straight up word from the spear guys. I will be on those rocks on opening day looking for my fish. Our policy out the jetty, as well as off, is “eighteen or over”. Did I just say that? Anyway, there are fish all over the joint, and I expect we’ll be seeing the first triggerfish and sheepsheads any day now. So we’ll see you down at Barnegat Light bait and tackle, and if you go there, please stay out of my chair! It took Basil all year to put it out there, purposely. As always, good luck and great fishing to everyone.
