Bob Misak Jr with a nice tog from the docks
As of last week’s word there were decent catches of fluke out there for those who hit it hard and put up with some boat traffic. The bigger flatties were still hiding out in the deep waters of the inlet and the shorts were stacking up also, apparently moving out of the scorching waters of the bay. Some guys, on the other hand told me of good days of fluking in the double Creek channel and out by the sod banks. These areas have some awesome holes and the sod banks are a good 20 to 25 ft. deep, so the bottom temps being a degree or two cooler will keep those fish around until this cold front comes in on Thursday night. There are two great tournaments going on for fluke on Saturday; the South Harbor marine tourney for Oceans of Love, a great organization to fish for. Tom Mackie will have a two fish total for the win, which a slight switch up from the same old “one fish wins” game. Second is the infamous Lacey Elks extravaganza, which has a great captains meeting and one heck of a shindig at the weigh-in. These guys will have music and tons of food, as will the South harbor tourney, and both will have musical entertainment. Captain’s meetings are 6
o p.m. on Friday evening, and this will put you there early. I’ll be out there trying my luck, and remember; all you need is that one big fluke to put you in there. So load up with those live baits and get the upper hand on things, and go give it a shot, but I warn you; you are fishing with some of those local boys who know their flukin’ and you’ll need some skill as well as luck to unseat those sharpies.
The docks over at 6th st. still continue to give up fluke, but there has been a little lull in the action this week as a ton of throwbacks hit the deep water over there. Either that or the old “dock barnacles” over there are finally petering out. Those old dudes did great over there this season, but they haven’t brought up that ten plus lb. fish they find every year. Let’s go old guys; time ain’t passing slowly so let’s get that doormat! I was over there the other day and Grandpa Al was sleeping on the bench with his rod lying over. I shook him to make sure he was asleep, and I scared him so bad I thought I gave him a cardiac. The other old dudes yelled at me saying I shouldn’t disturb a sleep-sitter.
Out at the end of jetty the weather is cool, the togs are stacked, and sheepsheads are moving in with a good number of triggerfish schools. Some guys are catching triggers off the surf on Island Beach which is a bit unusual, but I’ll take it. You should head out there with some green crabs and fresh clam baits for those triggers, and you might snag up one of those 15 lb. sheepsheads or a giant drum. The one fish tog limit doesn’t faze us because we can muster up an 18 to 20 inch fish to make the trip worth it. There’s always a good shot at a big fluke out there too, as there is 25 ft. of water out there. Don golden drifted outside this week but the non-existent winds drove him over to a wreck where he had some quality sea bass, and ended up with some nice fish in the box. The togs are moving in towards the 6th dock as well, and some 16 inch fish have been coming over the rail, but the front of the lighthouse is holding some huge white chins.
When weather cools down on Thursday it’s a good time to head over to B.L.B.T. and grab some of Basils’ fresh and personally ground chum and get over to Oyster Creek channel for kingfish and triggers, with a mixed bag of fluke, blues, and maybe somebody will catch some blowfish to get me excited. Don’t take that wrong. But as the season progresses and the fluke tourneys get everybody out searching around, we will without a doubt see some mega-fluke come to the scales. And speaking of mega-fish, congrats go out to the boys in the Beach Haven tuna & marlin tourney for their 367 lb. big eye (or somewhere close to that) and grabbing a cool 90 grand. Now that’s a good day of fishin right there. So we’ll see you at the shop, and good luck and great fishing to everybody.
