BALTIMORE – The Coast Guard is urging mariners to stay in port as foul weather from Virginia to New Jersey is expected to make its way through the area this weekend.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has issued a winter storm warning in effect from 6 a.m., Friday to 10 p.m., Saturday for Maryland. Winds are expected to reach up to 15 knots and gusts to 25 knots on Saturday. Accumulation of 20 to 28 inches of snow is expected throughout the weekend.

Regions to the south can expect heavy rain.

The Coast Guard urges people to be mindful of the following safety tips:

* Stay informed: The public should monitor the weather conditions through local television, radio and Internet. Information on small craft advisories and warnings can also be obtained via VHF channel 16.
* During period of high wind secure your belongings: Owners of larger boats are urged to move their boats to inland marinas where they will be less vulnerable to breaking free of their moorings or damage. Trailerable boats should be pulled from the water and stored in a place that is not prone to flooding. Those who are leaving their boats in the water are reminded to secure life rings and life jackets.
* Be cautious of hazardous materials: If you have hazardous materials on or near the water, you are responsible for any spills that may occur. Take the necessary precautions to secure them prior to any foul weather.
