    Chesepeake fishing in October ?????

I'm in a club out of Pittsburgh and we are going on a trip 2nd. week of October to do a striper trip. Last year we caught small rockfish and blues. What is the best time of the year to fish for Big Stripers? Also who has the faster newer Chesepeake boats that could show a group of 24 guys a good two days of fishing? We also need somewhere close to stay. Where we go now they have rooms and old wood boats. I thought it was nice to see how my Great Grandfather fished once but would like something more up to date for our trip next year.

What is the best place to bring my own boat 24' Hardtop and what should we expect to catch?

    Thanks for your help

Mid October is a great time of year for the Schoolie's. They will be rampant all over the lower bay and it's tributaries. The Togs will be biting and some Flounder will still be available. Spot fishing should be good then too. Hotel accomodations should be easy since the tourist season will be winding down. Not sure what you mean by the faster newer boats. Are you guys bringing a convoy of boats down and looking for someone to follow around, or are you looking for a big boat to take everyone on? There are a couple of boats plenty big that could take everyone, not sure they are real fast though. The larger Stripers will come when the water gets colder for the most part. Twenty pounders are nice fish in mid October. Some slobs might be caught here and there, but, look for the big girls when the water gets in the fifties. Do you want me to get you in touch with a big head boat out of Lynnhaven, if so send me a PM. I am making a call for you now. Hope this helps a little. I will be glad to show a few steeler fans around if you guys want a guided tour.

    BF,

Come to Deale Md. I have 2 boats, that can serve your needs. I operate off of the Tenacious, a nice celan 40ft Robbins, the perfect bay boat. We run with a few other newer boats also, all fast and fibergalss and between two boats you will have plenty of fishing room. There are plenty of places for overnight accomidations. You can expect a wide variety of fishing around then. The rockfishing is wide open and we primarily live bait or jig. Plenty of bluefish around and always the possibility of sea trout. All done on light tackle, but we occasionally troll if we must. Send me a PM and I can give you any details you need.

On another note, I noticed you were refering to bigger stripers. Most of ours out of deale in Oct are 20-26inch fish, but tons of them. We do not get our push of the 20 plus lb'rs until right before Thanksgiving.

Big Stripers are later in th fall, we fish at the mouth of the bay and the Ocean(out to 3 miles). We get a few around Thanskgiving, but the last few years late December through Jan is when the cows come home. The Bay closes at the end of Dec, but the Ocean season is awesome. Plenty of ramps down this way to launch. I know of several good charters, but they are all 6-packs, not sure who could handle 24 at a time.

That time of year, your best bet for quality fish will be Flounder, Red Drum, MAYBE a late Cobia. Stripers will be here, but not "quality" fish.

Capt. Jim Brincefield can handle that many anglers in the bay. His boat is the Jil Carrie, and it's docked at Long Bay Pointe inside Lynnhaven Inlet.

Otherwise, you'll be looking at chartering a head boat. I think you can charter the whole boat for ~1500.00 for a half day of fishing/night trip.

like the others have indicated the fishing depends on temp, bait, etc. but there is always something to fish for which is nice. i know omega has been pounding the men at the md/va line in the bay in the last week

the second week in October will carry the 25 inch rock over most of the fishy areas of the bay.
Let the air temp, water temp drop and watch out. The second week in November to second week in December is much much better if you are hunting xxlarge. Now those dates are normal. If the weather goes crazy it could be sooner or later. The water temps are staying steady as of late. Good luck on the Chesapeake Bay
