MAY 09 WEEKLY FISHERMAN REPORT

At Cedar Creek Bait and Tackle, Tom reports the drum are in thick and feeding just 3 miles out their inlet. Drum fishing for these monsters can be done by the least experienced angler. Call in advance for surf clams if you want them guaranteed for your trip. The drum tournament is taking off so be sure to sign up before going out; a 20.00 entry fee could win you 500.00. It seems as if every year, a newbie catches the heaviest fish. There is a big misconception that drum fishing is done at night. All the drum they’ve seen so far this year were caught in the morning and afternoon. Night fishing will also produce excellent catches. The flounder bite is starting, they’ve seen a few from the Beach Ball, Coral Beds, and Brown Shoal. The rockfish have moved up north and the tog fishing is excellent.

Last Sunday, Capt. Melvin Wanger of the Flounder Pounder fished with Ben Neff and Brian Yoder using green crab at Site #6 coming ashore with keeper male tog. Rick Bortz came ashore with tog from Site #7 and 14’ Light. Mike Cathell Sr and Jr came ashore with black drum from the Coral Beds using surf clams on the incoming tide. Fred and Robert Gentry fished Site #7 on the 4th and 7th, coming in with their limit each trip. Capt. Bob Goracci of the Well Done fished the end of the outgoing tide when he hooked and landed his first drum in the 30 lb range using surf clams at the Coral Beds. Mark Lillquist fished the Coral Beds in 20’ water near the end of the incoming tide using frozen clam, coming ashore with a 35 lb drum.
