Capt. Bob's Marina Chincoteague Island Fishing Report 7/27
Back to the photos, I am trying to scan alot of the photos that were printed when the catches came in, however, I will not be able to give names, details, etc, since that was cross-referenced to the Photo # in the camera. But, for now, let's talk fishing.. If you have been on the Island with a line in the water, then you KNOW what an amazing year this has been for Flounder - as a matter of fact, the best in over a decade!! In May and June, the fishing action was unreal!! Many anglers maxing out on the creel limit of 5 fish per person. The good fishing continued until the arrival of croaker - when, if you have ever fished flounder when croaker are around, then you know how aggressive they are - making it a true challenge to land a flounder. Heavier weights, the old-timer "coat hanger" rigs and dropping the squid off your bait list - is just about the only hope of hooking into some flounder. The magic bait this season has been Gulp Saltwater Swimming Mullet, in either 3" or 4" OR the same with Shrimp, both in a Pearl White, then adding a Jumbo minnow on the same hooks, top and bottom! Magical formula - tantilizing bait mixture - 99% guaranteed to work!! OR, if not, it could simply be - Angler Operator error!!! ;-) Also, on the scene right now are snapper blues, a few scarce kingfish/whiting - they have not saturated our back bay waters this year in the legions like they have in the previous 3 - 4 years.. But, the croaker are still providing a lot of fishing fun for the family. After two to three years of waiting for the coveted blue fin tuna to make a respectable showing again in the blue waters off of Chincoteague - they finally have. We have been seeing some awesome 150 Lb. bluefin being landed anywhere from the Parking Lot, to the Lumpy Bottom, the 26 Mile Hill, with a toss up of half the boats chunking while the other half are still trolling with either green machine or rigged BallyHoo. This year is proving to be another banner year for the larger (10 - 25 lb.) mahi-mahi. Just find a good weed line and work it... The Blackfish Banks sub-way cars are hotter than love producing Spadefish, Trigger, some nice Sea Bass and huge flounder. I'll try to get some photos on this site in the next few days. Sorry, again... Capt. Bob's Marina Chincoteague Island, Virginia www.captbobs-marina.com |
