Fishing Report 8-21-2011

As summer starts to draw to a close the flounder are starting to make their way to the ocean. As they make their way out to the local wrecks and reefs, try working the deeper channels that lead to the inlets, Ships Channel behind Somers Point, Broad Thorofare, behind Margate and Longport or Rileyís Channel. Baits of choice include but are not limited to Gulp, Mackerel strips, and long strips of Squid. The small Snapper Bluefish that are everywhere in the bays are great to catch on light tackle and make excellent bait for hungry Flounder when live lined. They are also an excellent way to catch Stripers which are patrolling the local docks, especially around the cleaning stations and along the rocks near the G.E. Inlet. Small Sea Bass and a few Kingfish have been taken in the back bays. The crabbing has been great with many patrons reporting nice catches of 5+ inch crabs being placed in the baskets.

If you make your way out front, the beaches are giving up some nice Kingfish. Try using Fish bites, Gulp Bloodworms or the real thing. There have also been a few flounder taken in the suds. Croakers should start to make their presence known any day now. Start in 20 feet of water and make your way out. They eat just about anything. Work your way out to the reefs, the OC, GE and AC, and the Flounder bite is real good. Long strip baits are the way to go. You have to get in the rubble and loose a few rigs, but it is worth it with reports of fish topping the 8 pound mark. A little deeper out, anglers are getting some nice Sea Bass on wrecks in water up to 100 feet. Some of these fish are over 3 pounds.

If you venture out to the deep, the bite is still very strong. Big Eye Tuna are breaking the backs of many an angler. White Marlin, Mahi, Yellow Fin Tuna and Tile fish are also being taken in decent numbers.
