Saildogs on fly
Quote:
Tackle I would use a 14wt fly rod for them with matching reel, a 11 or 12wt will do at a push, just depends on the size of the fish, Leader consists of a butt section, class tippet & shock leader all have to be certain lengths if you fish to IGFA regs otherwise it does not matter. Method The method I have used is this.... troll 6-7 knots around an area you know holds fish, with a teaser line consisting of birds (Something that creates a lot of splash) and two flat lines one short one long (You can fish more just depends how many hands you have on deck) on these lines I would run a hookless "Wide range" over a belly bait or mullet, something soft so it will keep attacking and tough enough to stand some chewing but streamlined enough to easily pull out of his mouth. When he comes up clear all other lines whilst the "Teaser man" teases the fish, by just letting him get a taste then pulling it out of his mouth whilst all the time drawing him closer to the boat. When he is within casting range (You should have already practiced this and have enough line pulled off the reel and coiled in a bucket, with some water in to stop tangling) the teaser man jerks the teaser from the water, the captain throws the boat into neutral and the angler makes the cast, or in reality more of a lob! wait a split second to let some line out then pop that puppy by pulling on the line, hopefully if the fish is hot enough it will climb all over the fly, when it does YOU MUST WAIT UNTIL IT TURNS then strip strike it with your hand, the rod will not have enough power to set the hook initially, once it has took off I would stab it 2-3 times with the loaded rod just to make sure. The drag at this point should be set just enough to stop a "bird’s nest" and no more, once he has done his thing tail walking etc. tighten up the drag and fight the fish always using angles to throw him off balance and tire him out quicker. Finally This is not as complicated as it sounds and when you pull it off there is nothing like it. The teaser man has just as much fun as the fisherman and everyone else can watch the show from the fly bridge. In NC, it would be possible on whites if it was calm enough. If anyone wants any more info /advice on rods, reels, hooks, leaders etc just ask. |

i was fishing block island rhode island last fall and the guide did a bait and switch over this bar and it was incredible. to see a 10-20 lb striper breeching on a popper is awesome. took a bunch on the charteuse fly popper about 8 10 inch long.
