This is something most guys here dont know about me. I have been an avid fly fishermen for about 13 years, for everything from trout to stripers and drum. I havent dabbled in the offshore yet but I do tye quite a few flies and tube flies for offshore fishermen including some marlin flies.
I am waiting on the stripers to push up into the rivers in a month or so to get back on them!
Here is a fly that I made up a couple of days ago, while dreaming of warmer days to come.
The front is cupped a bit to create more 'pop'.. the butt end is hollow so that I could tie in a spreader and give the feathers more volume, creating a better transition between the big popper head and the rest of the fly. Total length is about 7", trying to imitate a small mack.
Here is another pic showing the back and 'mouth'. The fly is made up of a foam cylinder (like a Bob's Banger) with sheet foam wrapped around it. The cylinder is approximately where the green lines are, to create the cupped mouth, and to create a hollow section in the back where I tied in a spreader and the feathers.
Right above the hook point I tied in some corsair/ez-body tubing and folded it back on itself to create a cone or "spreader". The hackles are just tied in infront of the spreader, which causes them to flare out and maintain the 3D profile.
