Fishing this week was somewhat slow due to the effects of the latest hurricanes and the impending arrival of Igor.
Inshore, we have gotten reports of nice catches of tog around the bridges and off the sod banks behind Margate. Although the limit is still one fish, many anglers have reported catching nice three to five pound fish. Virtually all of these fish have been caught using green crabs. Before the big blow, we had reports of sea bass being taken at the inshore reefs. It is our understanding that the season has been extended until October, 11 and then reopens November 1 to December31. These fish have been caught on a variety of baits including squid, minnows and clams. Sporadic reports of stripers being taken at night have come in but the real steady action has yet to begin. Additionally, surf anglers are still catching kingfish in the foam using blood worms and fishermen in the Great Egg Harbor River report bagging nice perch also using blood worms.
Last Sunday, Chuck Weimer and the boys on “Spools Out” fished from the Spencer to the Lindenkohl. They were working the 100 Fathom line on the chunk with sardines when they hooked into and landed a 64 pound Wahoo that measured 68 inches. They also trolled up 10 nice mahi mahi on the forth fathom fingers.
It appears that due to sea conditions the earliest any more offshore trips can be expected is mid to late this coming week. More next week.
