Fishing again this week was good and both inshore and offshore anglers reported nice catches.
Flounder continue to be caught in large numbers in the bay and inlet but the ratio of throwbacks to keepers continues to be in the ten to one range. Some anglers have told us that they have hooked thirty to forty fish before boating a keeper. Minnows, squid, Gulps and mackerel are the baits that seem to get the job done.
Offshore, between blows many of the tuna fishermen had very good luck as the yellow fin; dolphin and billfish continue to cooperate.
On Thursday Mario and company on his boat “Northcote” fished the Toms Canyon and went four for seven on yellow fin tuna. These fish were all in the fifty to sixty pound class. He was using ballyhoo, spreader bars, and green machines. They also hooked up with a blue marlin that was an estimated four hundred pounds plus. After a pitched battle they lost the fish.
Bob, Bruce, Jason, and Jon Cummings also fished just inside the Toms Canyon and got covered up with yellow fin tuna. They boated sixteen yellow fin all in the fifty to sixty pound range.
They were using ballyhoo and spreader bars. They were aboard their boat the “Bonnie Lee”.
Finally, Ron Kovler on his boat “Next Case” fished along the 100 Fathom Line in the Spencer Canyon. He had several nice yellow fin tuna the largest of which weighed in at 56.5 pounds. He too was using ballys, green machines and spreader bars.
Another good week. More next week.
