Halleluiah, the tuna have arrived. Additionally, the fluke seem to be cooperating also.
Mid-week, Dennis Dobrowski and Nuncie Sacco fished the flats behind Brigantine and caught twenty fluke. They ended up with eight keepers all over twenty inches. They were fishing on Dennis’ boat “Crown Royal” and were using Gulps and minnows at the time.
Over the weekend Ed Idzik and crew on his boat “Lady Barbara” fished the Spencer Canyon along the 100 Fathom Line and hit the jackpot. While dragging spreader bars the hooked into a 226 pound big eye tuna. The fish was over six feet long and took well over an hour to come to the boat. Next up Bob Traa and crew on his boat “Reel Affair III” trolled the Lindenkohl also near the 100 Fathom Line and bagged a 283 pound big eye that measured just over seven feet in length. They hooked up with a fish of similar size on a 30 International and could not get the fish to the boat. They also had seven nice yellow fin. They were dragging spreader bars, ballyhoo covered with Ilanders and their own special Hippy Squid lure. Wayne Ehrke was on the rod and the battle went for nearly two hours. Congrats, boys! Ron Kovler and crew on his boat “Next Case” also worked the Spencer and ended up with three nice yellow fin tuna all in the fifty pound class. He was trolling spreader bars and ballyhoo also. The Cummings boys on their boat “Bonnie Lee” also worked in the Spencer and while trolling for tuna dredged up a 116 pound Mako shark. They were trolling spreader bars and ballys and Jon Cummings was on the rod.
As an aside, the inshore reefs continue to continue to produce sea bass and there are kingfish in the surf.
