While large numbers of small flounder continue to be caught in the bays the real action this week was offshore.
On Monday of this week, Ed Rock and his crew comprised of Chip, Rich, Jerry and Mark on Ed’s boat “White Cap” fished the Northeast tip of the Lindenkohl and had three yellow fin tuna in the 60 to 80 pound range. They also bagged a white marlin which they promptly released and had mahi-mahi to 25 pounds. On Wednesday Bill Haas and crew on his boat “Rose Lee” also worked the Lindenkohl along the 100 Fathom line and loaded up with yellow fin. They had eight fish in the 50 to 65 pound class. They also had dolphin in the 15 pound range. They were dragging; ballyhoo covered with Ilanders, green machines, and spreader bars. Jerry Slipakof on his boat “Dreamer” fished the Cartaret and the Lindenkohl and had yellow fin tuna in the 50 to 60 pound range.
Charlie Falkenstein and crew on his boat “Play Pen” fished the Spencer mid-week and had yellow fin in the 65 to 70 pound class. They also raised and caught a small white marlin. Spreader bars and ballys were the lures of choice. Finally, on Friday Todd Scarborough and Joe Kelley ventured to the Lindenkohl on Todd’s boat “Carpetbagger” and had several nice dolphin the largest of which weighed in at 28.5 pounds. They also had a small white marlin which they released after a brief tussle.
Inshore fluke are being taken in large numbers but by and large the ratio of throwbacks to keepers is still in the ten to one range. All in all a good week. More next week.
