Fishing this week was good overall as both inshore and action offshore continued to be reported by our customers.
On Tuesday, Stanley Wirpza and Charlie Schell ventured to the GE Reef on “The Miss Lindsay” and had a very good day. Using a combination of minnows, squid and Gulps they bagged a total of six keeper flounder. Charlie’s largest fish weighed in at 7.16 pounds and Stan’s biggest catch was 4.43 pounds. The very next day, Tim Fitzik fished the OC Reef and also had a nice number of keeper flounder. His biggest fish weighed in at 7.07 pounds and measured 26.5 inches. He was using squid strips at the time. We have had reports of small blue fish being taken outside and sea bass also. As an aside, crabbing has been outstanding back in the bays and creeks virtually all summer long.
Offshore we had some nice results from very different places.
Early in the week Charlie Dollaway and crew on his boat “Captain Chazz” went to the Toms Canyon and had a mixed bag of yellow fin tuna, mahi mahi and white marlin. The tuna were in the fifty pound class and the whites were all mid-sized and the dolphin were all ten pounds plus. All of these fish were caught on ballyhoo both naked and covered. A nice day. On Tuesday, Bill Haas and company on his boat “Rose Lee” ventured to the Baltimore Canyon and had four nice yellow fin tuna all over 50 pounds. He also had a 22 pound dolphin. He also was using ballys, some covered some not. The water temperature was 77 degrees and he said he couldn’t find any significant temperature breaks.
Richie Adleman and crew on his boat “Alana K” fished the Lindenkohl and had one nice yellow fin in excess of 50 pounds and also had four nice mahi mahi on was 18 pounds plus. They too were trolling ballys and artificials.
The catch of the week goes to Jon Cummings. While fishing in the Wilmington Canyon with his dad on their boat “Bonnie Lee” they had a nice catch of golden tile fish and a number of very nice mahi mahi all above ten pounds but the big news is that Jon caught an 87.75 pound Wahoo. The fish measured just over 65 inches and had a very large girth. The fish was caught on, you guessed it a ballyhoo. The water temperature at that time was 76 degrees and again they encountered no temperature breaks either.
A good week overall, more next week;
