    Brennan Marine, somers Point fishing report 10-9

    October 9, 2010

    Fishing this week picked up primarily due to the clement weather, permitting offshore fishermen to get out to the canyons over the weekend.
    Inshore, tog fishing has been very good with catches being reported in the inlets, around the bridges and along the sod banks. Even though the limit is still one fish, the numbers being caught and subsequently released bodes well for later on in the season. Dan and Donna on the “Drop Zone” had 4 fish in the three to four pound range and were able to keep two. They were using green crabs. Fiddler crabs have also been used and are equally effective. Blue fish and croakers can be had just off the beaches in about 40 to 50 feet of water and stripers have begun to show up in the inlets and a few have been caught at night in the back bays. The croakers favor clams while the blues will take almost anything. Kingfish continue to be plentiful in the surf and blood worms are the bait of choice for them.
    Offshore this weekend was a bonanza. On Saturday Chuck Weimer and crew on “Spools Out” fished the Spencer Canyon and had their limit of 12 yellow fin tuna in just under six hours. Phil Gieseler hooked and landed a 73.5 pound long fin tuna. The fish measured just over 48 inches and was only five or so pounds short of a state record. They were using butter fish, sardines and squid. All these fish were caught on the chunk. Bob Ogden and company on the “Woodshed” were also in the Spencer and limited out on yellow fin tuna in very short order. These were cookie cutter fish all in the 30 to 60 pound range again on butters, sardines and squid. Finally, Bill Haas and Bill Jr. and crew on his boat “Rose Lee” also fished the Spencer and went 5 for 7 on yellow fin all in the same range as the other boats but they also hooked and landed a 110.5 pound mako on a tuna rig set up. Nice going boys.
    More next week;
