Fishing this week was good overall and on Sunday and Monday, early in the week, offshore anglers were still able to make it out to the canyons for tuna.
Tog have been plentiful although the limit is still one fish and green crabs have been hard to get, anglers have used clams and fiddlers very effectively. In the surf kingfish are still plentiful and bloodworms are the bait of choice. On Saturday, Art Higbee fished the beach in Margate and caught a number of kings the largest of which was 15 inches long and weighed in at 1.28 pounds. Stripers have begun to show up in the back bays and on Wednesday Al Rocks fished the area near Seaview Harbor and landed a 34 inch 18.29 pound bass on clams.
Offshore early in the week, Bill, Ed, Barry and Fred on the “Koshi Kim” fished the Spencer Canyon and went 6 for 11 on yellow fin tuna and had two dolphin. The tuna were caught on the chunk, using butter fish and sardines. Tom Little and crew on the “Mischievous” ventured to the Northeast section of the Spencer and had thirty yellow fin. They released 12 and kept 18. These fish were all in the 30 to 50 pound range and again were taken on the chunk. Finally, the “C-Jam” with Mike, Scott, Freddie, Sandy, Chuck, Dave and Zack on board, also worked the Spencer and boated 13 yellow fin in the 40 to 70 pound class also on the chunk and broke off a large swordfish. The current weekend has been too rough to get offshore but I’m sure there will be more opportunities when the sea lies down a bit.
More next week;
