Fishing activity this week was stymied somewhat by hurricane Earl, but before the blow began several anglers ventured offshore and also worked the inshore reefs with some success.
Sea bass, tog and flounder were all taken early in the week on the GE and Ocean City reefs. Squid, minnows, clams and Gulps have been used with varied levels of success. Kingfish can still be found in the surf and blood worms are the bait of choice. Croakers were taken in thirty five to fifty feet of water, and a few stripers were caught in the back bays.
Offshore early in the week, Bob Cummings and crew on his boat “Lady J” ventured to the Wilmington Canyon in pursuit of tile fish.
They caught over forty golden tile fish the largest of which weighed in at 33.5 pounds and measured 39.5 inches. They were fishing in 500 to 600 feet of water at the time and used squid primarily as bait.
Joe and Frank Kelly on their boat “Salty Tiger” also fished the Wilmington and caught and released seven white marlin. Additionally, they had five nice yellow fin tuna in the fifty to sixty pound class. They were dragging an assortment of lures and ballyhoo.
Ed Reese and company on his boat “Hataway” were also in the Wilmington and had bagged two nice yellow fin and three large dolphin. They also were pulling a variety of lures, including ballys and spreader bars.
There were no reports after Wednesday as the eastern seaboard prepared for inclement weather.
More next week.
