Fishing this week was off and on again due to the weather, but the end of the week and weekend have proven to be very favorable weather wise and while all the offshore fishermen are not back as of the writing of this report, earlier this week on Tuesday, we had reports of a large warm water eddy at the top of the Wilmington Canyon and that a substantial number of yellow fin tuna had been taken. Many of our regulars ventured offshore over the weekend to begin what we hope is a lengthy period of overnight chunking.
Inshore, the reefs are producing sea bass and tog. Croakers have shown up in some numbers and can be found in approximately forty feet of water off the ferris wheel in Ocean City. Large blue fish have been reported being trolled up further north off Brigantine and snapper blues can be found in the bays and inlets.
Stripers have been taken off the bridges and around the sod banks in the back bays and a variety of baits, including clams and fresh bunker have been used. Additionally, anglers have been plugging the sod banks at dusk and early in the morning and have also taken a few keepers. We weighed in some nice weakfish over the weekend which has been a rare occurrence for us this year. On Saturday, Tom McReynolds weighed in an 18 inch weakie that was close to two pounds. He was using a top and bottom rig and mullet at the time. He says he was off Brigantine beach fishing in what he calls the “black hole”.
As the water cools off we expect the striper run to begin and the big blues should show up in numbers also.
More next week;
