Once again this week stripers headed the way with blue fish mixed in with them and tog also have been caught in some numbers.
Early in the week, Trevor Teubert fished the Gazebo on the beach in Somers Point and bagged a 22 pound striper. He was fishing with clams. Dan Reardon and crew on his boat “MT Bucket” fished the Cape May rips and had a few nice bass, the largest of which weighed in a 24.75 pounds and measured 39.5 inches. They were drifting eels at the time. Bill Troehler and company on his boat “Drop Zone” had two nice bass while fishing the North bar of the GE Inlet. The larger fish weighed 21.5 pounds and the smaller bass was 13.5 pounds. They were also using eels. Mid-week Frank Rich and Ron Smith jigged for stripers in about forty feet of water off the South end of Ocean City and pulled in four nice keeper stripers. They also reported catching large blue fish along with the bass. They were using hammered diamond jigs and large bucktails for bait. On Friday, Dave Taylor fished the GE Inlet and bagged four keeper stripers all in the thirteen to fifteen pound range. The largest fish was 15.75 pounds. He was also using eels. On Saturday Pat Martin fished the beach near Corsons Inlet and took a 34 inch striper that weighed 12.5 pounds. He caught this fish on a top and bottom rig using a combination of clams and chunks of finger mullet.
We have had reports of tog being taken of the Ocean City fishing pier and the Longport jetty also.
Finally on the fresh water front, Bill Troehler fished Birchgrove Lake and limited out on rainbow trout. The largest of these fish was 2.24 pounds and measured 17 inches.
Many of the local anglers believe that the striper run has just begun and that in the coming weeks they will school up just offshore and in the inlets prior to running up the rivers. More next week .
