October 24, 2010

This was the week of the striper in our area. It seems as though the fish have shown up both in numbers and also size.
On Wednesday, Ted Bolton and Rocco Demas fished on their boat, “Salty C” off Atlantic City and bagged two nice bass. The first was 20.5 pounds and measured 35 inches and the second was 26.5 pounds and measured 39 inches in length. They were pulling shad umbrella rigs at the time. They also ran into large blue fish mixed in with the bass. Also on Wednesday, Len Trigiani and Fred Kisby fished on Len’s boat “Double Bogey” off Long Beach Island and bagged a number of nice bass. The largest of these fish weighed in at 36.5 pounds and measured 46 inches. They also were dragging umbrella rigs at the time. On Friday night the surf fishermen got into the act when Aldo Ramos caught a bass that weighed in at 32.5 pounds. He was fishing off the beach in Longport and had a chunk of fresh bunker on at the time. Trevor Teubert also had some smaller bass while fishing at the Gazebo in Somers Point. He
‘s was using fresh clams and mackerel. On Saturday, Greg Disabatino on his boat “Dream On” fished off Atlantic City toward Brigantine and bagged a 36.5 pound striper that measured 44 inches. He was trolling spoons, Stretch 25’s and umbrella rigs. Also on Saturday Jim Davis on his boat” Reel Danger” fished off Brigantine in approximately 20 feet of water and had four nice bass. The largest of these fish weighed 30.25 pounds and measured 44.4 inches. They were using live bunker at the time.
Additionally, lots of tog have been caught near the bridges and at some of the inshore reefs. Green crabs are the bait of choice for these black fish. The winner of our striper tournament last week was “Doc” Freeman with a 38 pound 47 inch bass.
Finally the feel good story of the week; seven year old Colin Byrne, on his first fishing trip ever, fished Corsons Inlet on Sunday and bagged a 31 inch ten pound bass. He was using a live spot at the time. Congrats, young Colin!
More next week;
