Bluefin? Sure. Bluefish? Too many. Makos? Yep

This past weekend was a real eye opener for all of us along the SJ coast. The water warmed to 66 degrees along the 20 line and all HE double hockey sticks broke loose. Bluefin from 20" to 35 lbs. appeared and some boats had 20 or more trolling. We troll with 20-30 lb rods with TLD 15's and 20's and they are a ball on that tackle. Of course, once in a while, something really big and tuna like shows up and we need to refill a reel with line, but that's the chance we take. In addition to the Bluefin, there are some 12-18 lb, False Albacore that really know how to bend a rod. One problem out there is that is impossible to troll fast enough to keep the alligator bluefish off your lures. Hey, they have to eat, right? Several friends of mine have been fishing sharks and have seen, jumped or released Makos. Most of them have been small but, hey, they are the real thing. I imagine that this fishing will continue for several weeks and it seemed to get even better last year in July. That is great to look forward to. Sea bass and fluke are biting as well so there is a great variety of fishing available and there is probably something out there to suit everyone's fancy. There are still some dates available on the Free Spirit right now and , truthfully, now is the time to get set for the great day and overnight trips to the deep that will be starting right soon. Good fishing to all and keep those lines tight!
