BLBT report 11/02
The bass fishing completely busted open this past weekend with a lot of real big bass coming to the scales in the L.B.I. surf classic. Early last week Ray Sullivan weighed a bluefish in at 14.19 lbs tying the 14.19 lb. fish Dave Hershberger weighed early in the tourney. Since Dave weighed in first he maintains the bluefish lead, but with the massive amounts of gators coming in, the lead is in jeopardy. The bass fishing went ape with Tom Law Sr., a regular in the derby weighing in a 33 lb. fish on Saturday. On Sunday as Basil predicted, three days before the full moon saw a mess of big bass come in. Robert Muller and Brian Dalton started things off with 2 fish at just over 31 lbs, only to be out done by derby regular Tim Stumpf with his 35.25 lb. striper. Three more sharpies weighed in fish as well on Sunday. Scott Simpson had a fish at 36.81 lbs, and big bass king Mike Greene showed up with a 38.44 lb. bass. Where does Mike get all these giant fish? He’s a sharpie like no other, and some tough competition at that. Also on Sunday another regular in the derby weighed in big. John Parzych hit the scales with a 38.69 bass, pushing everyone closer to that 50 lb. bass that Basil thinks is going to “smack the beehive”. The competition in this year’s extravaganza is fierce to say the least, and there are a lot more big bass that are going to come in yet, so grab some bunker heads from the shop and get out there for your turn at that bruiser linesider. In the bay the action has heated up a bit with quite a few thirty lb. fish coming off the sod banks by the guys eeling at night. The guys that are anchoring up during the day and clam fishing are doing pretty well, but the fish are eaters at 30 to 36 inches. The guys tossing poppers up on the flats are catching shorts every day, but I think a lot of them have given up and went eeling for bigger fish. Mud channel has been a hot spot for those looking for eater bass and the shop is stocked up with spots for the guys who don’t want to mess around. Those spots are fool proof this time of year. Out on the jetty the tog are still hangin’ around and in a week the limit goes up to six fish at 12 inches, but crabs are getting harder to come by. Over by the 6th st. dock the tog are thick and big with some eight pound fish being yanked over the hand rail there. I have a net with a ten ft. handle on it to get those bigger tog over, as you I heard some young kids were over there a week or so ago and tried to lift a 10 or 11 lb. blackfish and snapped their rod like a twig, losing the fish. In the ocean the head boats are starting to take some ling and some pretty nice tog even though the customers can only take one until the 15th. So the fishing is great right now, and hopefully we’ll see you at B.L.B.T. just before you go out and catch your big bass of the 2009 season. As always, good luck and great fishing to everybody out there. |
