--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

We saw them busting very close to our boat and they were BFT in the 100-150 lb class and every one on our charter saw them as well as my crew. They were not the little 30 lb footballs we often have seen in mid-June in the past but the size we cuaght all last summer from the Lobster Claw down to the Saugage Lumps. I had a very experienced second mate on board this weekend that fishes on a prominent charter boat out of OCMD for the shark tournament and we got reports last night that some were caught on Saturday up in the 130 lb range but we have not had time as of this morning to verify this but we are almost 100% positive BFT were caught both on Friday and Saturday. We fished as far south as the legal limits of the shark tournament allows and we had at the end of Friday 71 degree water that was nice and dark blue and looked perfect for tuna. We did not see sand eels on the bottom where we fished but the the BFT were all on top busting on bait. It reminded me of what I have seen down in Morehead City, NC in the winter when giants are rolling on the surface eating shad and my only thougths is they may have been chasing bluefish and eating them which the ones over 100 lbs do. Almost every captain claims to have seen BFT of various sizes this weekend all the way from the Misty Blue down the 20 line to where we saw them quite a ways south of the Misty Blue so I am sure all the traditional lumps and hills along the 20 probably has schools of BFT of various sizes right now. Great omen for the start in inshore tuna season and they are there NOW. You do not have to run as far we did to find them as I saw some schools much closer to Cape May inside the 20 fathom line on the way home but these 12-18 fathom tuna are probably the small ones in the 30-50 lb class. I will know more in a few hours but I think from what I was told and what we saw this weekend it is now a safe bet to go out and target some early season 100 lb plus BFT. For those not familar in how to catch these bigger BFt over 125 lbs trolling only and that is the way they are caught this time of year I there is an article in May's issue of Salt Water Sportsmen on how we troll for bigger summer BFT off the mid-Atlantic coast. I also wrote an article for SportFishermen.Com a few years ago that can researched on the site that covers from A-Z on trolling for summer BFT. We will be putting together regular discounted day trip charters together right now plus make-up trips for small parties and singles.
