Canyon Tuna Weekend Report
Tuna Fishing Heats Up Saturday & Sunday
Good - Poor -Pretty Good - Very Good
10-11-10 Report
We had 4 Canyon tuna trips since Thursday. With the exception of Friday night it was the best fishing of the season topped off with great action on the Sunday night trip and some very nice tuna.
Our first tuna came over the rail around 3AM. After that it was slow unti 4:4AM whe the 60-75LB yellowfin schooled under the boat and began to feed. The action was hectic and the large fish gave quite a battle. We boated over a dozen and lost mant more during that time when there were as many a 7 on at one time. The action slowed until a little after daybreak when the tuna began to feed again.
We caught mostly 60 to 75LB yellowfin and a few 40 - 60LB longfin. A few were hooked on jigs but bait fishing was the way to go today.
Steve Kazlowski from Valley Stream NY caught his limit and helped hook up two more passengers with 65LB yellowfinn,
John Zapella from Westfield NY caught his limit of 65 - 70LB yellowfin,
Carl Brown from Willingboro NJ caught 2 nice yellowfin,
John Kohlmann from Brick, NJ caught two yellowfin, one lonngfin and a mahi-mahi,
Many others caught at least one nice yellowfin and had a shot at more.
There are more yellowfin & longfin moving in every day. This has been the best fishing of the season.
The big Jamaica is scheduled to sail the canyons 5 times each week through the end of the month and there will be more trips in November if the fishing holds up.

We are now taking reservations for Sea Bass trips scheduled to sail in November and December.
10-8-10 Report
Canyon tuna fishing was good on the 31hr trip Oct. 7-8. We started hitting some pots for Mahi-mahi in the morning. The sea were choppy but we still managed about 50 mahi up to 20LBS. We worked down the bank until we found the best water to set up for thnight. The temperature was 70.5 degrees.
We caught our first fish just after sundown, a 90LB yellowfin caught by Art Haluszka. We had bites all through the night, usually two at a time including a 125LB mako which we lost at the boat. The best shot came around 5AM when we boated 10 yellowfin in a short period of time. We had a few more bites before it was time to head in.
Art Haluska caught his limit of yellowfin.
Joe Peldunas from NC also caught is limit of yelowfin,
Zein Khairullah fromm Prospect Park NJ caught 2 yellowfin.
Most of the tuna were caught on bait and a few on jigs. During the morning shot I came down the cover the chunking while the mates were busy gaffing and it did not take long to catch a yellowfin on a jig.
The most productive jig this season has been the 8oz silver hammerd jig. Sardines have produced the most fish caught on bait.
10-10-10 Report
After Thursdays trip we returned to the same area expecting another good catch. We started a little south of where we fished on Thursday. We lost a couple tuna shortly after anchoring and then caught a couple of blue sharks. The water temperature dropped so we picked up and moved several miles to the south where we found more warm water. We read fish several times and lost a couple more but, a bite never developed and it was a poor night.
We tried several pots on the way home and caught a few mahi on each pot but there were not many pots in the area we were fishing.
Saturday Night
Saturday night we decided to head in a different direction. The water looked good and there were more squid than we have seen in the canyon all year. We fished for almost three hours without a bite so we moved about 15 miles down the bank.
There we found lots of squid and a few fish. We lost two during the night and that was it. It looked like another tough one until 6:45 when Gary Yearwood landed the first tuna. It was a longfin that weighed about 65LBS. Shortly after that we landed an 80LB yellowfin. We then started to have some steady action. Most of the tuna were 55 to 70LB yellowfin.
We had some pretty good action until it was time to head in. Gary Yearwood landed the 65LB longfin and a 70LB yellowfin,
Jeff Simpson from Livingston NJ caught his limit of 60 - 80LB yellowfin,
Other 65-80LB yellowfin were landed by:
Sam Dibner from Bethleham,
Bob Smith from Woodbury, Ct,
Ron Taurick from Woodbury Ct,
Joe Beacher & Bill Beacher from Brooklyn,
Todd Stueber from Staten Island, NY,
Bob Kneemoller from Toms River NJ landed a 75LB yellowfin, and there were several more boated.
It looks good for the Sunday night trip. There is more warm water moving in to the Hudson Canyon so I expect to see some good fishing on our upcoming trips.
The big Jamaica is scheduled to sail on 31hr trips on Tuesday's and Thursday's.
22hr overnight trips sail every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. We are also available for charter.
Special trips for sea bass will begin on November 1.
