Cod Invade New Jersey

The Saturday offshore wreck trip was the best in years for the big Jamaica. About 300 keeper cod up to 39LBs were boated (we don't count throwbacks) along with a dozen Pollock and some ling. We fished several wrecks and they all had life on them, some better than others. The cod were larger than our last trip with most from 8 to 15LBS and a few larger.

Many passengers had good numbers of cod along with a few ling and Pollock.

Some of the high hooks were:

Anthony Smith from Phila, - Bill Monahan from Bensalem, PA,

Leon Curley from Phila, - Mike Armbuster from Allentown, PA,

Jerry Brown from Telford, PA - Jerry Rosenberg from Bear DE,

Jim Matthews from Somerset, NJ, - Troy Hawkins from Boston Mass.

The pool winners were:

Dunbar Atkinson from Parlin NJ with a 39LB cod

John Petty from Piscataway, NJ with a 30LB cod.

It looks good for our upcoming trips. The water temperature is right for a good migration of cod. We have not had these conditions since the mid 1990's when we had our last good run of codfish. That year we had good fishing through April and into May on the offshore wrecks. The big Jamaica is scheduled to sail offshore every Saturday and Sunday. We will sail the night before at 10:30 or 11.

Good Again on Sunday!

3/7 report

We sailed offshore again Saturday night and tried a different area. Once again we had very good codfishing. It was not quite as wild as Saturday but the cod were a little larger with most of the fish between 10 and 18LBS, and several larger fish up to 28LBS.

A small group onboard boated over 140 cod with a few ling and Pollock mixed in.

The Pool winner was:

James Sutler from Staten Island, NY with a 28LB cod. James also landed 9 more cod from 15 to 24LBS.

James Blushstein from Vineland, NJ caught a double-header Pollock that weighed 25LBS & 20LBS plus 6 cod and several ling.

Chris Steinert landed 10 cod with 5 between 18 and 22LBS,

Barry Young from Belmar caught 10 cod, 6 weighed from 18 to 24LBS,

Joe Gissinger from Phila also caught 10 cod,

and others with 8 or more were:

Bobby Claudio from Wall, NJ,

Todd Hooper from Whiting, NJ,

It looks like we have an old fashioned spring cod run developing. Not only are the offshore wrecks holding loads of cod but, they are also migrating to some of the 20 to 40 mile wrecks. The big Jamaica will be sailing for cod through April. Check out our fishing reports and schedule at our web-site at: www.bigjamaica.com

We will also add additional trips during Easter week vacation.
