Ray Sullivans 56lb 7 oz bass, one of the largest of the season so far

The third week of the L.B.I. Surf Classic started out even better than it did in the two weeks prior. On the 27th many big fish came in to be weighed, and all were again caught in Holgate, which has now become the mecca of the island for both bass and blues. Kurt Horensky and Charlie Dress both lit it up with 45 and 44 lb. fish and three fish in the 30’s were hauled in as well. Joe Handley topped that list with a 34 lb. bass, followed by Tom White and Chris Masino with 32 and 31 lb. linesiders. This will likely be one of the best derby days in the tourney, but the way things are going, anything gives. There were also two gator blues at 14.63 lbs. brought in and Mike Cucinotta edged out Lou Prete by weighing in first, but the blues are just a stone’s throw away, and bigger fish will come. The first three weeks saw over 60 bass and 25 or 30 big blues come to the scales and we’re not quite at the halfway point yet. Ray Sullivan’s 56 lb. 7 oz. bruiser will be a tough act to follow, but guys are knocking on the door! Hang in there, Ray!
The head boats are still lumping up sea bass and tons of porgies, and it’s a ton of fun to get out for a trip or two before the weather gets cold and load up the freezer with some goodies, like an 8 or 9 lb. tog. The jetty is holding some mammoth tog right now and this week will calm down enough to get out there and grab some of those huge white chins. I know of a 25 inch fish coming off the south jetty but the angler disappeared, and not surprisingly. You better wear your cleats though, as those jetty rocks are unforgiving on your head and neck in the fall. I think that’s what happened to me, I forgot my cleats one too many times. I know I took a dive during a weekend at derby time in front of a multitude of friends, and as I lay there like a slug, I wondered if anyone saw me. I peeked over and they all saw me. All you can do at that point is stand up and take a bow, and pretend it didn’t hurt. The condo docks are still giving up some good togs as well, and I haven’t left there without a keeper yet this fall, so this is a good place to hide from the winds, but not from the old guys. The inlet from the sod banks out to the lighthouse is hot right now for those using live spots and those same spots will get you fish outside the inlet in about 40 to 60 ft. of water. The shop has what you need; spots, green crabs for togs, fresh bunker and clams, and I’d like to say cleats, but I didn’t see any. So here we are in the “getting good” part of the fall bass season in south Jersey, and I am reminded of it when I take that wave to side of the head on the jetty or walk into a 7 ft. troth on the beach. What a blast! So we’ll see you down at Barnegat Light bait & tackle, and don’t look for Basil again this week; he’s in Missouri hunting again. And when he gets back, he’s goin’ to Disney World!! No really, when he gets back he really is going to Disney world. Good luck out there and be safe.
