“The 50 is on the board”-Fishing report-10-22-10-By Bob Misak
As of last report I stuck my neck out there and said that a 50 lb. bass would win this year’s L.B.I. Surf Classic. I was thinking for a couple days that it was a stupid thing to say just on a “funny feeling”. But, it was to be! Ray Sullivan, a hard core regular of the derby who fishes with his wife Joann each year, checked in down the south end on Thursday afternoon with a 56 plus lb. monster cow of a bass! Thank you Ray for making the tourney one heck of a competitive year, and we still have 6 and a half weeks to go yet! At the very least, Ray will win the two week segment that ends on Sunday night. A very hearty congratulations to Ray Sullivan on a very well earned lifetime trophy bass. At this point the north end has become a ghost town with everyone fishing down south, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t bass up there. The 14th st. bar will give up some big bass in the weeks to come, and no way am I sticking my neck out on a 60 lb. fish. I like Ray’s style, the “beehive smacking” of a huge fish this early in the tournament. And, I think the big bass are going to continue to hit the scales until the end of the derby, meaning a record number of fish and a record year on L.B.I. Heck, the only bass bigger than that I’ve heard of in a couple years was the late great Jimmie Haines and his 55 lb. surf caught monster some years back. The shop is freshened up with bunker and fresh clams, and there are fish just everywhere right now. I was tog fishing over at the 6th st. dock the other day and as I was reeling in a small tog, a 16 lb. bass came up and smashed it on the top of water before I could get it off the hook. The inlet is chock full of fish from 30 inches to 30 lbs, and live spots, eels, or jigs are nailing fish regularly. The tide doesn’t seem to be a factor but that northwest wind is turning fish on, besides the fact that we are between moons right now. It is totally and completely “on”, and now is the time to hit it, and hit it hard. Basil and Nick have spots and eels, and those are what are bringing in big fish right now, because the calico crabs are causing everyone a headache in the surf by stealing baits. So live baits are without a doubt the way to go, and out of the 800 anglers who signed up for the derby I think I’m the only one who is still messing around with blackfish. Of course that pesky job of mine is continually hindering my efforts to “become one with the bass”. By the way, if you want to see the funniest bass skit on the face of the earth, just go to www.xtranormal.com/watch/7132093/ and you will wet yourself! This is some class A bass comedy that everyone should see, and send it to your friends, it’s a safe site. The blues are very slowly moving in and they’ll be hot and heavy any day now with some blitzes going on near Bay Head and Seaside. We’ll see you down at Barnegat Light bait and tackle, and congrats once again to Ray Sullivan. Good luck and great fishing to all, and be safe.
Some massive fish are coming from the south end of L.B.I. It's crazy down here! A 56 lb. bass came in today. It's on!-Bob Misak
