Barnegat Light B & T - Fishing report-04-24-10-By Bob Misak
As we move into the spring fishing season there are things happening all over. On the beach, in the bay, and outside the inlet are all producing good fish. On the beach Barnegat Light Heavers member Dominic hit the sands this weekend for three bass with the biggest at 34 inches, and Ol’ Moonphase Bob Braack fished with “the bass bandit” Bob Massa and they caught bass too. Ted Kamish hooked up with his old friend Greg and they also lit up some linesiders on the beach. So out on the sands of Loveladies is where everybody is catching fish, and make sure to stop at the shop and reload on plenty of clams! Some guys are using a dozen or two per trip.
Outside the inlet just north of the jetties guys are catching good bass with small green Stretch Imitators and jigging with Avas and bucktails is just as productive. The fish are in about 40 ft. of water, and most are keepers. Chris Graham got out there again this weekend and caught a nice blitz of bluefish in the inlet with a bunch of 8 to 10 lb. gators and a 25 lb. bass mixed in the pile. Bill Evans and Bill Goldy also had a great day outside with 2 30 and 2 40 inch bass. Ron Watson and Kevin Troy were also fishing outside this weekend and they were high hook with 9 bass on their boat. So the bass fishing is off the hook, and expectedly with the blues moving in so early as well.
Barnegat Bay is thick with bass and blues as well, with guys using Poppers to entice the schools of bluefish that were strangely finning on top in the bay this weekend, and poppers were the only thing they wanted. Mark and Herland Cornelius found a bunch of blues and caught a couple dozen, and the guys that are now anchoring up along the channels are catching keeper bass as well. Flounder season went out with a “poof” on Saturday, and most guys tell me, “good riddance”. I guess it just ain’t what it used to be. I have heard a sporadic report here and there about some night time weakfish being caught in the bay, but the guys that are catching them will be invisible, as I don’t expect much of a run of tide runners in 2010.
The wreck fishing boats are still banging cod fish in 60 and 70 ft. depths and the tog are moving on to jetty rocks, but the season goes by-by in a week (the 30th) so if you want tog, you have to hit it now! Matt Rossi and the dive crews on the south jetty are seeing big tog and bass at the base of the rocks, and this spring is really going to be a great one for bass and blues. The herring are all over Barnegat inlet, and some sharpies are going out and using herring darts to catch some up for live-lining, and those will be the guys who nail those 30’s and 40’s, or bigger. Speaking of giant cows, the “king” Mike Green should be showing any day now, and then you’ll see some cows come in! So we’ll see you down at Barnegat Light bait and tackle, and get those boats in the water, because “the water has broke!” Good luck and great fishing to everyone.
