Bob Misak shows off a great day of fishing at the Barnegat Light Jetty
The week past was a rough one for the surfsters fishing the L.B.I. SURF Classic and after a really tough weekend with extremely rough seas, guys finally started to hit it again on Monday and bring in some more quality bass. Tom White, a regular in the tourney, started things off on Monday with a 20 lb. bass, and Tuesday was a great day as the surf calmed down and Mother Nature allowed anglers to fish. Larry Weidner, a former derby winner, weighed in yet another fish breaking the 40 lb. mark at 47.88 lbs! Joann Sullivan, the wife of our current leader, Ray, also hit the scales with a 21 lb. bass, and the participation has been absolutely great in this year’s bass-a-thon. The giant cows that are coming to the scales have been endless since the tournament started, and we have seen a phenomenal year here on the sands of Long Beach Island. Only a few bluefish trickled in this week, and again, it’s getting kind of late to see a run of bigger blues. 14.63 lbs. is still leading the bluefish category, and a 15 will probably take the whole ball of wax, I mean cash. The six fish limit on tog started Tuesday as well, and anglers were all over the south jetty lined up, and boy, were the togs thick! I fished with good friend Jeff Crouse out there and we had five really nice eating sized togs from 15 to 18 inches. There were a lot of quality fish taken off of the jetty on opening day, and what a blast it was! The fish are stacked all the way up to the treacherous rocks around the lighthouse, but the old barnacles over at the sixth st. docks have been hard pressed to get a keeper. No biggie, those guys had 20 inch every day over there for the longest time, and if you want a limit of blackfish you’ll just have to get those cleats on and get out there. No doubt the head boats will bring in some 10 to 12 lb. white chins, or bigger, with some fish actually breaking 14 or 15 lbs. this week alone. The shop has plenty of baits like green crabs for your tog trips and plenty of fresh bunker and clams for you bass guys. Boats are still drifting spots out there in the inlet, and limits of 30 inch fish are hitting the docks at the end of the day. Outside the inlet, boats are jigging up limits of bass and catching bigger blues off shore a ways, and who knows, maybe they’ll slam into the beaches this week for one last hurrah. This fall has been just great in the tog and bass areas of the south Jersey fishery, and I don’t see anything but smiling faces when I’m out there. Everybody is catching fish, and that’s what we love to see! I’m sure everyone has heard of the 58 lb. bass taken out of Cape May by a 12 yr. old girl, and they’re hashing out the details for her to hold the Jr. State record for bass. That’s music to my ears when a young fisherperson starts out like that, it’ll have em’ hooked! So we still have a couple weeks until crunch time, and speaking of “crunching”, make sure you wear those cleats. Good luck and great fishing to everyone.
