8lb 6 oz fluke wins Sandy Hook Bay Angler Fluke tournament
Dennis Nalepa of Red Bank took the lead in the 29th annual Sandy Hook Bay Anglers two-day Fluke Tournament on Saturday with an 8-pound, 6-ounce entry caught by his son D.J. -- and never looked back while winning both that day's prize of $200 plus the first place $3,000.
Second prize of $1000 went to Derek Bielitz with a fluke of identical weight but was 3/4 inch shorter.
Michael Wells of Point Pleasant took third and $600 for a 27 1/4-inch, 8 1/4-pounder, and fourth went to Bob Cameron of North Haledon with a 26 1/4-inch 8-pounder worth $350. Nick Katzenberger of Oceanport was fifth with a 27 3/4-inch 7 1/2-pounder that earned $250. Thomas Smith of West Orange took $125 for sixth with a 26 1/2-inch 7 3/8-pounder, followed by Chris O'Connell of Jackson with a 25 1/4-inch, 7 1/8-pounder worth $100. Robert McCarter from Hillsborough finished the prize list with a 26 1/2-inch 6 3/8-pounder for $75. The lady's rod and reel prize went to Veronica Konapka of Sayreville for a 4 1/4-pound fluke.
The field was diminished by the thunderstorms predicted for Saturday, but 100 boats competed in what turned out to be fine weather. Tournament direct Fred Wiedemann and his wife Clara will be stepping aside after many years of running one of the state's most popular contests that funds the Sandy Hook Bay Anglers' children's fishing outings.
