It had been a few weeks since my last trip on the bay, and with Monday's cooler temps and lack of wind, we hit the water.
We launched an made a quick run to a spot where a friend already had fish erupting under his boat. Ed is a fly fisherman too, and he was enjoying keeper sized fish on nearly every cast.
A hook and line commercial boat did made me and Ed feel like channel markers as he dragged his baits right through the school 20 feet off of Ed's port side.
We spent most of the evening patiently drifting around the same area and catching fish from 17-25". The bigger fish were a pleasant surprise, and were very aggressive.
1 oz Hopkins shorties and 1 oz. stingsilvers worked well, as well as a small gummy minnow.
With the number of small fish around and the amount that are caught and released I always replace the treble hook on the jigs with a 2/0-4/0 barbless J hook. Hook up ratios stay the same, and unhooking is easier on both the fish and the angler.
There is plenty of bait out there again this year and topwater bite is starting to turn on. Get out there and enjoy it while you can.
