16th Elks Annual Fluke Tournament HOT
Through the heat of what could be the hottest day of the year, the fishermen moved their boats out of the inlet at 6:00 A. M. on Saturday, July 24th to start the Point Pleasant Elks 16th Annual Fluke Fishing Tournament. They floated out into the ocean and dropped their lines in anticipation of catching that large Fluke that would win them a prize in this years Tournament.
When they returned and weighted their fish we got the results of their efforts. The winner of this years Tournament in the power boat division was a fellow Elks from Portland, Maine, Mike Desimon with a fish that weighed in at 9.1 lbs. Second Place went to Charlie Parker of Oceanport, N.J. whose fish weighed in at 8.5 lbs. Third Place was a three way tie between Dennis Machamer II of Scot Run, Pa., Gene Helbig of Little Egg Harbor, N.J. and Larry Grab of Nutley, N.J. who all caught fish weighing 8.3 lbs. Sixth Place went to Emilio Saters of Cliffwood Beach, N.J. whose fish weighed 8.2 lbs. Seventh Place went to Vito Manzi of Morganville, N.J. whose fish weighed 7.5 lbs. and the youth prize went to Lauren O'Mally of Brick, N.J.
The winners in the Kayak division where, Fisst Place John Miller with a 19.5 inch long Fluke. Second Place was Joe Hollywood with a 19.25 inch Fluke. Larry Nebman was the winner of the Fluke Slam, which is the total lenght of three Fluke caught with a total of 52.5 inches and Judy Seger was the winner of the longest fish caught that was not a Fluke.
While the fishermen were enjoying themselves out on the water, the members of the Lodge wer sweltering in the heat eitherat the weight stations waiting for the fishermen to return or bach at the Lodge preparing for the picnic later in the day.
The tournament accepted entries up until July 23rd and had qualified anglers competing with each other to catch the biggest fish, by weight, for the cash prizes in the powerboat division. There was a total of 182 boats that registered for the Tournament.
The Kayak Division which had kayak product for prizes was attended by about 30 entries. This was the third year of the Kayay Division and this year was based on a catch and photograph format.
Even with the weather being very hot most of the fishermen and their families returned to the Lodge after fishing to enjoy a picnic and get the results of the days activities.
Keep your eyes on the lookout for the 2011 Tournament which will be held at the end of July.
