06-26-10 Shark Fishing Report

We had 5 individuals from Staton Island, NY charter the boat today. They wanted to try and catch a thresher shark. I ran the Indian out of Angler's Fishing Center in Lewes, DE today and we went outside the "A" Bouy andset a drift.....Lots of bait after about 2 hours into the drift. They bottom fished while we were awaiting the major bite.....
......I moved the boat at around 10 am and set another drift just outside and to the Southern of my first drift.....
.....I saw a small Thresher cutting bait on top about 1/4 off our stern at about 12 noon......
.....I almost moved the boat for another drift @ 12:30 pm.....as my mind was starting to second guess my drift as we hadn't had a pull yet......Another side of me was saying just let 'er slide and be patient......
Well I started the engine and told the crew we were going to wind 'em up and go back and make another drift over the same are and chum it up hard.......30 seconds later 20 feet off my bow - A maybe 150 lb Thresher slashed the top of the water on a school of Bunker......

.......Ok guys - I am going to rethink this stradegy and I am shutting the engine down and this is the drift we are staying on the rest of the day.....
1:45 pm my inside Blue ballon got hit for a split second and moved rapidly maybe 5 or 6 feet fast to the left in the water.........Watch that Blue Rod I yelled down to my mate....
I ran down stairs to get in the pit as we were all anxiously awaiting a strike ........ When ZZZZing the Red Outside Deep Rod got hit.....I grabbed it let him run maybe 3 seconds and sunk the 10/0 J-Hook as hard as I could and FISH ON!!!!!!
The fight began.....the party was Stoked....Had him almost to the strike on a TLD 50......1 hour and 20 minutes later we landed a 287 lb Thresher......
The party was very happy and had more steaks than they knew what to do with........

Nice fish Terry. Now ya got me all excited, PM sent.
Stay on the drift, set up another drift.
Decisions, Decisions. Once I get the drift going the way I want I'll stay on it. Let the chum do it's work, Bring that critter to me. Looks like movin was the right move.
Surprised the thresher are still around. Seems like a few years ago out of OC you didn't see that many and now they are plentifull. Wonder if they were always there but folks just ran over the top of em to get to the Makos or somethin brought em in. Either way and I hope they keep commin.
