I strapped on the snowshoes a few years back and did some tracking above my house a few years back during the late muzzeloader season on Jan. I headed up the south facing slope of the mountain next to the house and jumped a half dozen does bedded down in the 2 ft. deep snow. A light crust on top allowed me to walk effortlessly on top while the poor does headed straight up busting through the crust heading for the laurel patch over the ridge on the north side. The snow was much deeper and had bridged itself over the laurel and the deer would leap and crash through, often dissappearing completely under the snow. I was able to stay on top and walk right up to the hapless creatures looking up in a panic to see me standing a few feet way looking back at them. I didn't have the heart to shoot.![]()
hate the thoughts of hauling one out in that deep snow too. I've done it a few times in central NY when I was "in my prime" should we say. Hunting down here on flat land has softened me up a bit to say the least.
is that NC? just kidding, neat pic but COLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just bought a home in NC, and the one thing I am really going to miss is the mountains of north central Pa where I have spent the first 40 years of my life. I guess it is time for a change.![]()
You will miss it for sure, but NC has it's beauty too. The one thing I can say is when I go back to the hills of central NY I appreciate the scenery and people that much more. Welcome to NC...
Have had the oppty to do some hunting in that kind of snow in PA a few years ago....you would think it would be easy...but you have to get out there....THAT IS TOUGH.
