That first bear has really short legs!!!! I understand how your camera got smashed in a bear proof cage though. A few years back (well before the season came in), we put a fifty five gallon drum of peanut butter out deep in the woods. Secured it to a tree. Guess what, we have yet to find that fifty five gallon drum. Aliens I think. We'd put a smooth hole in the drum and they'd run that paw in there and clean evry bit of the peanut butter out every time. You ever use PVC pipe, capped and cabled to a tree????? Frank
HEY FRANK; YEAH THAT FIRST PICTURE IS A REAL OLD SOW LAST YEAR I POSTED ALLOT OF PIC'S OF HER WITH FIVE TWO YEAR OLD CUBS, THEY HAVE SINCE MOVED ON AND SHE IS VISITING THE BAITS AGAIN THIS YEAR, WONDERING IF SHE CAN STILL HAVE CUBS THIS GO AROUND, SHE HAS A HUGE BUTT AND A STOMACH TO GO WITH IT, SHE IS THE HEAVIEST SOW I HAVE EVER SEEN FOR SURE, THE SWAY BACK IS A SURE SIGN OF HER AGE.
NO DOUBT THE BEARS DRUGGED OFF THE PEANUT BUTTER BARREL AND HAVE IT HID OUT THERE IN NO MAN'S LAND, THEY ARE SO STRONG I'M IN SHOCK SOMETIMES WHEN I SEE WHAT THEY DO, THEY TOTALLY TRASHED 1/4' PLATE STEEL AND THEN PROCEEDED TO EAT AND PLAY BALL WITH TWO OF MY SET-UPS THIS YEAR, YOU WOULD THINK SOME GRIZZ CAME IN INSTEAD OF A BLACKIE, THEY NEVER STOP AMAZING ME...
I USE A PVC, SET-UP LIKE YOU MENTIONED FOR DEER, IT HOLDS ALLOT OF CORN, AND YOU CAN LEAVE IT FOR AWHILE, I NEVER THOUGHT OF IT FOR BEAR I JUST THOUGHT THEY WOULD TEAR IT DOWN AND SMOKE IT LIKE A PIPE JUST SUCKING UP MY BAIT AND MONEY, DO YOU USE THEM WHERE YOU HUNT ...

I just checked on my cam after a few weeks and found it ripped from the tree. Second cam to get torn from tree. I am using the bushnell trophy cam and my buddy uses cuddeback, he has not had any problems. The plastic that holds the strap on the back broke on both my cams. I knot the strap so it is more secure but wonder if I should just let strap slide out of the buckle if the bear wants it that bad. Did you ever have them carry one off that you did not find? I do not want to lag anything to a tree. I am on private property.
HEY FINEGRADE, IT WON'T MATTER WHAT YOU DO WITH THE STRAP, IF THAT BEAR WANTS THAT CAMERA ITS A DONE DEAL, I MAKE MY OWN STEEL CAGES TO PUT MY CAMERA'S IN AND THAT DOESN'T STOP THEM AT ALL. I'M DOWN TWO CAMERA'S AND FOUR STEEL CAGES SO FAR THIS YEAR, THATS A RECORD PACE FOR SURE, I ALWAYS FIND MY SET-UPS NOT FAR FROM THE TREE, THE BEAR ALWAYS LEAVE THEM SO I CAN FIND THEM SO I CAN GET MAD AND SPEND SOME MORE MONEY TO REPLACE THEM.THE BEAR SEEM TO BE REALLY AGGRESSIVE THIS YEAR MORE THAN USUAL.
IF YOU CAN'T LAG THE CAMERA TO A TREE, HERES WHAT I DO, GET A METAL FENCE POST AND A PIECE OF 3/4 PLYWOOD, DRILL HOLES INTO BOTH AND ATTACHED WITH CARRIAGE BOLTS, ATTACH CAMERA TO THE PLYWOOD WITH A SCREW GUN AND SOME PAN HEADS, THEN GET A LUMP HAMMER AND POUND THE FENCE POST INTO THE GROUND CLOSE TO THE TREE YOU PICK ATTACH TWO HOOK EYES TO THE PLYWOOD AND RUN A CHAIN TO THE EYES TIGHT TO THE TREE, ATTACH A PADLOCK TO TIGHTEN THE CHAIN AND YOUR GOOD TO GO, IF THERE ARE NO TRESS AROUND JUST POUND THE POST IN THE GROUND DEEPER, IT WORKS LIKE A CHARM UNTIL THE BEAR DECIDES ITS TIME TO PLAY BALL WITH YOUR SET-UP, NO HARM TO THE TREES.
HOW DO YOU DO WITH THE BUSHNELL CAMERA, THE CUDDEBACK IS NICE BUT WAY TO MUCH MONEY TO USE FOR BEAR, WHEN ARE YOU GOING TO POST SOME OF THOSE PICTURES YOU HAVE.
REMEMBER TO USE CAMERAS WITH IF, AND NOT WHITE LIGHT FLASH AT NIGHT IT WILL DRAW ATTENTION FOR SURE, IF YOUR CAMERA HAS A RED OR GREEN LIGHT ON IT WHEN SOMETHING TRIPS IT AND THE CAMERA TAKES A PICTURE, PAINT THE LIGHT BLACK SO IT GOES WITHOUT NOTICE BY THE GAME, ALWAYS WEAR PLASTIC GLOVES SO YOU DON'T LEAVE ANY SCENT ON THE SET-UP.

Most people have no idea what a bear is made of, thus what it is capable of. Looking at the size of the bones in their foreleg's, how deep the root's of their teeth go back into the jaw, how little "gut's" there actually are (compared to a deer even, the simple mass of the muscle anywhere on their body, etc.......... Bear are nothing short of a machine!!! Read it, believe it!!! Frank
I am not all that happy with the bushnell, its similar in price to the cuddeback but doesnt seem to get the same quality of pics.
The bushnell has a red light that goes of when it takes the pic, which you point out. Maybe this is a reason for them to mess with it.
I like your idea of the portable set-up. I definitely am going to try it. Thanks
FRANK, I AGREE WITH YOU 100%, MOST PEOPLE CAN'T GRASP AHOLD OF THE FACT THAT THE BLACK BEAR HAS A SMALL AMOUNT OF GUTS COMPARED TO ITS SIZE.
THINKING ABOUT WHAT YOU HAVE SAID ABOUT THE POWER OF THE BLACK BEAR, NOW FLIP THE COIN TO ITS COUSIN, THE GRIZZLY / BROWN BEAR, WHICH PREY UPON THE BLACK BEAR, NOW THATS A SCARY THING...
LETS NOT FORGET THE POLAR BEAR, WHICH BREAKS THRU THE ICE AFTER SEALS BY POUNDING IT TO PIECES...
