What in the world am I up @ 2:00am for?
About 5 more hours and it is legal hunting time that's why.
Got the waders, shells, a few deeks packed up and hit the rack early. Couldn't sleep with the excitement of opening day of duck season, so finally got up. Good ole Beaver Pond I've been hunting for a while will be the spot this morning for the Woodies. I can get in a early shoot and still be at work by 9:00. So---- I check the Virginia Game laws one more time for limits and notice something. Duck season opens in the Old Dominion on Oct 5. What?--- no, it is always the first Wed. in Oct. I even saw it somewhere. Gezus Fing %^$%^, NC season opens today, and Va. tommorow. I had it all planned--- early am hunt near the house, get to work by 9:00, leave work at 3:30pm to run down to the land in NC for the evening hunt. Three cups of java in me now so I'll never get back to sleep--- Sometimes it's not all fun being an idiot. |

Watch out for those beavers....they can mess a guy up in a jiffy!!
I've gotcha beat. Was out at WVU still and had found a nice little WMA south of town by about an hour. I had poked around in the early season and shot a few wood ducks, mallards, teal, and a BANDED goose. It'd been a good year so far. I was probably sleeping my way through class and cramming before tests, but big deal, I was shooting shit. So it's early novemeber and my teacher/hunting buddy honks and I head out and load up the canoe and decoys in his truck. It's nice and chilly and I bet there's some ice forming on the ponds. We point south and wind our way to the hunting area. Park in the normal spot, get everything loaded up and ready and start into the swamp. HOOONNNNKK....sweet there's still geese here. The whistle of wings is insane. I know I've heard noise that that before, but that was Arkansas, not WV....something isn't right. It was starting to get light when Kelly decided he wanted to check and see if geese were in season. I continued into the water and could now start to make out the birds in flight all around me. SHIT!!!! came from the truck. Ducks aren't in till next week, someone checked last years regs!!!! WTF. We sat there as "shooting time" came and went and watched mallards, teal, wigeon, pintails, shovelers, geese, woodies and God knows what else. They were everywhere. Ice ringed the pond and the birds knew it was gonna be time to head south soon. they were in a frenzy and the only thing we could do was watch.I still regret not blammin some of those birds that day. It woulda been worth the fine. Just would have hoped the Judge understood Polack factor. So anyway.....Good luck tomorrow Glenn. Did you get my message about the 11th? -D |

Not exactly a stellar hunt this afternoon. 1 shot, 1 bird. (yes, it was flying)
I zigged when I should have zagged. The damn Canadian Seagulls have been taking thier afternoon siestas on the beaver pond--- 75 strong today. I walked across the dam (earth filled by farmer) and jumped two pair of Woodies on the other side in the swamp. So I figure the geese have the ducks all scared off and set up shop in the swamp. The geese all got up about 6:15 or so and the Woodies poured in right where the geese had left---- 250 yards away Oh well, there will be goose for thanksgiving, Xmas, new years, Superbowl------ Them varmint sumbiches are gunna die!!!!! Should have got rid of them during the early season--- live and learn |

Oh, on a brighter note--- the puppy got her first bird today. Not the best retrieve, but she got it and brought it back nonetheless.
