Golden Eye's and Buffleheads are actually cavity nesters.
They seem to be one of the few divers who's population is continually increasing.

This is only the second time we have seen them in our pond. Cool little buggers. We have had lots of different types of ducks but don't ask me to name them. They all look like ducks but different colors- guess we'll just keep taking pictures and posting em up to find out.
What you got there is obiously a rare cross bred.
Drake Golden Hooded Buffleganser.
Good eatin but not much meat on em.

Jay, were you hunting out of Hunting Creek on the ES of VA on Saturday? Saw a p/u with Carolina tags at the ramp and it said something like "fishbiteme.com" or something similar on the back window or tailgate.
I was at Black Hills State park, Montgomery County Md, looking at a project the other day and saw about 30 lost buffleheads. Nearest open water from there is a good ways away. Along with a few old squaws.
Not that Dave needs my concurrence. Here are a few pic's of each. First is the Bufflehead, second is the Golden eye, and third is Merganser. Bufflehead's are the smallest of the diving ducks, and I'll second Deep's comments...them boogers are faaaaaaasssssssssst!!!
THE CORRECT TERMANOLOGY HERE WOULD BE....
DRAKE COCKDIPPER......HAHAHA THAT'S WHAT ALL THE OLD TIMERS USED TO CALL THEM.....
FUNNY THING IS I HAVE NOTICED MORE AND MORE BUFFLEHEADS IN DEVELOPEMENT STORM BASINS AND PONDS HERE LATELY.......THE BEARTRAP HAS A PAIR THAT IS GETTING TO BE A LOCAL SHOWING AND CRIPPLE CREEK HAS A FEW IN THEIR PONDS........OCEAN PINES IS LOADED WITH DIVERS OF ALL TYPES IN THEIR PONDS..........
HEAK OF A GREAT DUCK TO HUNT FOR SPORT............JAY IF YOU ARE EATING THEM YOU MUST BE SHOOTING THEM OVER CORN OR SOMETHING THEY DON'T TASTE SO GREAT UP OUR WAY HERE ON DELMARVA...........
WHAT AN OUTSTANDING PIC BY THE WAY!!!!![]()
Agitated..
What you have there is a Common Merganser. They're more prone to fresh water environments then their Redbreasted cousin. They can wreak havoc on a fish population in lakes.
Hooded are another cool little merganser species that are the least populated hunt able duck in NA. 1 per day per person.
All three are commonly referred to as lawn darts, and all three taste like shit.
