Is going on....At least that is what I said to myself this morning..

Got up at 4:15am loaded the truck with everything including the kayak. Drive 45 minutes unload the truck and load the kayak to make the trip up the creek to deer hunt in the sleet. Pull the kayak down to the water slide it in and what the......
The kayak slides out 20ft like a bullet on a sheet of Ice like it was on skates!!!! I'm standing there scratching my head thinking whats plan "B".

Ok go back to the truck get a flashlight Shine it out into the creek "No way" I say. Solid sheet of Ice as far as you can see and all my crap, bow, camera gear everything is out in the middle in the kayak. Go back to the truck and finally found enough pieces of rope string fishing line to make a retrieval system. By now the sleet is really coming down and the sun is coming up. Get everything back in the truck crawl inside and take a siesta!!

Did finish the day seeing 7 deer so not to bad of afternoon................. Look before you leap~!!

I can imagine what you thought at that point...

Record low temp on the Upper James for us is 3 degrees banging through the ice to find open water (waders), launching the canoes to paddle upstream for 40 minutes, set up decoys and settle 15 minutes before daylight.

Difference is we planned on our ice. Your skim of ice with the kayak shooting out of reach must have been a surprise!

Where you deer hunting at? I've got a farm in Bertie so I'm wondering if my swamp got froze hard over the last week. Probably so if your creek is anywhere near Wanchese.

I hunt in Sampson county!!Second time I have seen it frozen in ten years. Its been pretty dry so there is not much water flowing right now. Im guessing without the flow it froze up..

ya just never know what the outdoors brings, it sure has been cold December.
