Wambulance time!

Forgot my boots 20 minutes into the ride and had to turn around. Tapped the "accelerate" button a few times on the cruise control once I had the boots on board and made up 10 minutes. I knew I would be a little late to the turkey grounds.

Got there just before flydown had one tearing it down way away from where I usually hunt and less than 100 yds from the truck. Well I might as well go after him. Setup on him, did a flydown cackle and then shutup once he responded. He kept hammering at anything and everything but wound up going the other way still gobbling. Left him alone, (again never leave fish to find fish theory kept playing through my mind). I later found out he had a hen with him that I saw after I got a biscuit and that he probably hung up on an old barbwire fence.

Did some run and gun at another spot absolutely ZERO!. Not even half as much activity as I had been use to the year before.

Came back to the hot beard. The closer I got I could hear him still gobbling. Setup again, this time a better set up I was finally able to get above and around behind him and most importantly on the correct side of the old fence. Some hard cutting to get him fired up and then I went silent. That was all it took to get to this birds ego. I could hear the spittin and drummin way before I saw him. Well next thing you know there he is looking hard to see where all that sexy noise is coming from. After getting on this bird this morning with no result and having to hear him gobble at least 75 times so far this morning my patience got the best of me. The only shot I had was very close at 22 yards I later stepped off. But my choice of area to shoot through could have been alot better. I took a breath, released half of it and squeezed. WTF!!!!! He jumped straight up, then took a few steps and flew off. Oh well, no use in beating myself up. I found zero blood maybe 5 feathers. I looked for him over an hour.

I do hope he made it so I can work on his ego again soon . I hung the empty shell on my fridge at home to remind me to be very patient and always wait for a good clear shot like I have so many times in the past.

Upon closer examination, my so called hole actually had 2 small limbs across it that were blurred to me at 22 yards. These were torn all to crap. I have had this happen once before some years ago. I am sure it will not be my last either.

Isn't that just par for a wise old Tom. One move ahead and shifty til the next time. You have to shake your head and wonder sometimes how crafty these birds are. Great story!

makes you want to kick your own butt don't it? It happens and that's about all you can say. I sure don't like it when they get in range and then somehow avoid the cooler. You had plenty of excitement, you weren't on the couch, and life is going on. I could have been a lot worse.

tough luck on the miss bryan...at least you were able to work a bird...spent 11.5 hours in the woods friday to hear zero birds, tried a different property saturday with no luck, both of these properties have produces in past years..needless to say I'm a bit frustrated this turkey season

Gonna give it another go this afternoon in brunswick county if the rain holds off..I need to get these birds behind me so I can get on the water and after some tuna's
